Paul Taylor is no stranger to solo shows.
Since he was 14 he's performed across the east coast, and two years later he completed a solo tour of Europe in 1987.
But Taylor's show tonight at Parker's Grille & Tap House will be his first since disbanding Paul Taylor and IInd Chance, his duo with fiddler, banjo and mandolin player Doug Bartlett.
“He's the best of the best,” Taylor said of his friend, three-time Grammy nominee.
Taylor and Bartlett first played together on porch steps when Taylor was 10 years old. After a chance meeting at Guitar Center in Syracuse 30 years later, Bartlett joined Taylor's band, Branded, and the two broke off as a duo when the group dissolved.
“We had great success, within a matter of weeks we were playing four to five times a week,” Taylor said.
With Bartlett's move to Arizona, Taylor will resume without much change. He will continue performing the array of country, alternative and rock music he and Bartlett courted on stage.
Taylor works from a cover repertoire of about 400 songs, as well as originals. If he hears a request he doesn't know, he rehearses it in time for his next show. Though he'll occupy the stage alone, Taylor expects the light-hearted atmosphere of his live shows to change little.
“The whole idea is to have a good time and make the crowd have a good time,” he said. “So you have to play the music they appreciate.”
