Dogs should always be kept on their leashes

Wednesday, April 2, 2008 12:01 PM EDT

As a new Auburn resident, I have been perplexed by a disturbing occurrence throughout the east side of the city.
A day rarely goes by without witnessing a dog walking without a leash. The owner is always in the presence of the dog; however, this is not a safe way to walk a dog.

I realize that the owner who decides the unleashing is OK believes they have an obedient canine. However, a dog without a leash is a recipe for disaster. Our dog recently experienced this disaster.

I would like to ask this community to realize the unpredictable nature of dogs and to be considerate of others who do not want to be intimidated by a dog off of a leash.

" I have live in Auburn for many years and I do believe there is a leash law. I am a dog owner and my dogs run on my fenced in property.

I am however, very bothered when someone walks their dog and lets it "relieve" themself where ever it darn well pleases and the owner doesn't bring anything to clean it up with. Especially in a park and worse yet in a school yard. You owners should be ashamed of yourself to let your dogs do that AND NOT CLEAN IT UP. Children play there and they shouldn't be stepping in that. Clean it up PLEASE! Better yet let them do it in YOUR yard. "

" Don't even think of looking for taxpayer dollars for a dog park. If you want your dog to run, go out in the country and run him. Or buy a house on a large enough property to run your dog. The taxpayers aren't responsible for your dog's exercise. Get a bunch of dog owners to buy the land for a park. I love dogs and would own one myself but I live on the beach and there is not enough room for a dog to run and too much traffic. So I made my decision and have an indoor cat. I made a decision that I am not real happy with but it was the wisest decision. "

" I am also a fairly new Auburn resident and I agree, every community needs a leash law. Having lived in multiple german cities (always with dogs) before, I do miss a dog park in Auburn. A dedicated area where well trained dogs can 'hang out' and have fun - off the leash. People that do understand dogs and their needs know that dogs need a social life just like we do.
Also based on my experience the nature of a normal developped dog is by far more predicatble than the nature of many owners. So please let us not blame the dogs. The problem is at the other end of the leash - even when the dogs are off the leash. "

" I couldnt agree with you more and am SO happy we have a leash law now. I was under the impression we always had one but not until just recently brought about by Palesh. People dont understand that an unleased dog can be attacked or be the attacker. Afraid I am a bit vocal when I c what u stated and let the owner know "hey there is a leash law". Cant hurt lol...Welcome to Auburn!! "
