City shutting down Frederick Street fire station

Auburn City Manager Mark Palesh said Tuesday he's shutting down the Auburn Fire Department's Frederick Street station in an effort to save costs and improve efficiencies.
The move, he said, does not require Auburn City Council approval, though he said he has discussed it with them. He also has the backing of interim fire chief Mike Hammon.

The move went into effect immediately. Firefighters were notified Tuesday morning.

The decision also comes at a time when he and the AFD firefighters union are at odds over contract negotiations. Palesh missed a deadline to formally notify the AFD the city wanted to negotiate a new contract, and the AFD union has said it is willing to go another year under the current contract. City officials want the AFD union to go ahead with the talks despite the missed deadline.

A key issue in the contract dispute is a required 15-person-per-shift staffing requirement, which has led to a spike in overtime costs for the city.

Palesh said Tuesday that the closure of Frederick Street station, located at the corner of Owasco Street, has nothing to do with the contract situation.

Union officials were not immediately available for comment.

A 2003 consultant's study of the fire department operations had recommended changes to the AFD's station alignment, including the closure of the Frederick Street location. It said the station, which was built in the 1960s, should be sold or used for another purpose.

The city now operates stations at Frederick, Clark and Market streets.

For a full report, including reaction to the decision from a variety of stakeholders, read Wednesday's edition of The Citizen.

" Shutting down a fire house is not a decision that should be made by the city manager, it is a public decision. As for the reason the “Genius” did it, to save money... um think about it folks, you may save a little but the maintenance cost of upkeep on a vehicle that is doing twice the calls is not going to be cheap. Going from a 3 Engine department to a 2 Engine department...umm not smart either. If you have a fire alarm call and everyone responds to that as per protocol, what happens when you get 2 more fire calls on opposite sides of the city.... umm I guess you can kiss you house or loved one goodbye. Because it will be gone by the time anyone gets there. As for the 15 firefighters per shift that is a safety issue. They need those firefighters.

On a side note… for all of those who dislike everything about the Fire Dept... I hope you are in a situation where you need them and they can’t make it to you because of the idiots in city hall and the city manager.

" To the City Manager,Mayor Quill amd the City Council: Unbeliveable I can't belive that you People would allow this to happen. The whole East end of Auburn with no Fire Coverage. Especially with three Adult Homes, Apartment Complexes, Elaine Estates for Handicaped people and all the Shopping Plazas. This is rediculious, as one other writer said what is the time limit to get Fire or Rescue Service. I think that you should have allowed the public to make this decision Mr. City Manager not you alone. Especially not allowing anyone to know until after it was all done. I heard it on the morning News this morning. I knew that there was talk, but nothing had been confirmed. So what do we do who live here on the East end of town. I am conserned, my Husband has a Heart Condition as does a couple of our Neighbors. Mayor Quill I can't belive you would allow this after all you are a Retired Firefighter and know this Cities size. It is all just unbeliveable! Wake up people, we may lose our residences as well as our loved ones. "

" Curious to see how long it takes to get up to the high school area here now. The Market St. station has a larger area to cover now. "

" I am getting sick of all we got to talk about is the fire department in the city! Let everybody do the math here. Lets talk about population first! In 1985 the population of Auburn was 32,548 and in 2006 the population was 27,776. This is a drop of population of 14.7%. We got a 15 man crew there divide 14.7% into 15 = 2.2 people. And yes the town around Auburn have increase in population. Second, lets look at the industry & retail business in 1985 to 2007 a drop of over 23% in the City of Auburn. O.K. the math here is 3.45 people out of 15 people.
Mark Palesh is a good city manager he is looking at the numbers and making sense in cutting 2 men out of each shift. How can we afford to pay anymore taxes to support the fire department that does not want to work with the city at all. Wake up look at the City of Ithaca with a population of 29,829 they have in there fire department BOTH PAID AND VOLUNTEERS there. They also have 2,053 more people living there. WE CAN'T LIVE IN THE GOOD OLDS DAYS FOR EVER! TIMES ARE CHANGING FASTER EVERY DAY! LOOK AT THE BANKING INDUSTRY HOW FAST THAT IS CHANGING!
I think Mark Palesh is treating the fire department fairly. The fire department gets a lot more than most department in the city. I know I just retired from the city and know what they go through each year on the budgets and workings of the city.
Fireman, don't bit the hand that feeds you. Work with Mr. Palesh not against him. "

" I hate to state it but it had to be done.....

Regardless of what anyone may think about union negotiations, the taxpayers of Auburn should never be held "hostage" by those who THINK they hold "all the cards".

" The next time we need an expert to do a professional survey of the fire department, we can hire cheeko. At least he feels he is more of an expert in firefighting survey work than the professionals. And maybe he will do it cheapo. "

" "bear" couldn't have said it better..by the time the other two fire stations respond to frederick st's jurisdiction your house or whomever needs help could well be on there way to gone. Just because one city manager thinks its not neccesary all of a sudden it changes? "

" I have an idea on how to save the Frederick St. Firehouse. Let's sell some of the bricks that the City wasted money on to revive the looks of our lethargic, failing Business District. Better choice than having another vacant Building in Auburn(or we could turn it into another Drug Store) "

" It is time for our city manager Mark Palesh to go!!! Mr Palesh seems to be under the impression that he and he alone runs this city. He states that he does not need City Councils approval to close the Frederick Street Fire Station. Maybe not but he might need the approval of the citizens who live within ENGINE 2's jurisdiction. Mr. Palesh I do think that this sour grapes because YOU missed the contract deadline for the firefighters. One other thing, Shame On You, Interim Fire Chief Mike Hammon, for going along with an outlandish plan.
It is time to say BYE BYE to Mr. Palesh and Mr.Hammon "

" Sure I take peoples jobs into consideration, firefighter jobs are part of the reason for the current spending problem. We cannot fund jobs just for the sake of employing people. The population of the city has declined, a hired consultant found that the Frederick Street station was not needed and basically the fire dept is costing the city more than it should. Are you happy that your tax dollars are being spent unnecessarily? To eliminate this property makes all the sense in the world. I'm sure the remaining fire houses will be happy to respond to calls in these neighborhoods. "

" apparently "fish" you don't take people's jobs into consideration or perhaps that this fire station actually responded to calls and emergencies in these neighborhoods. "

" perhaps then cheeko you can form a charity so that concerned citizens can contribute to the funding of the Frederick Street station "

cheeko wrote on Apr 1, 2008 2:23 PM:

" To shutdown a main, solid located, completely useful firestation, does not make sense. Fire insurance rates will sow since response time just went to the dogs. This particular firestation replaced Owasco Street Firestation with more room, firepower, and accessibilty. To eliminate this property makes NO SOLID SENSE, so in the words of 'OLD DONALD TRUMP', YOU ARE FIRED. "
