Bruno: Cigarette tax to go up, but no raises for judges in state budget

ALBANY -- Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno says state judges won't get a raise in the state budget now being completed.
State judges have gone without a raise for about a decade, and their salaries have fallen behind the pay of some federal and lower level judges.

Bruno also confirmed Monday there will be an increase in the cigarette tax as part of the budget. But he didn't say how much it would be and that figure might be negotiated into the afternoon.

The original proposal would double the cigarette tax to $3 per pack.

" I don't care if they raise the cigarette tax 100%!!!There is NOTHING good about smoking cigarettes. I quit them almost 3 months ago and wish I had never started. "

" Lets tax the bejeepers outta McDonalds, Arby's, Burger King and the rest of them because they are insurance draining habits too and tax coffee and sodas everywhere, I know many that are hooked on all of the above. Dont forget Dunkin Donuts! Im a non smoker and think the continued taxes on just ONE nasty habit/behavior is wrong. Gonna tax one, tax them ALL! "

" Raising taxes on cigarettes is good!
We need food, gas, etc. We do not need any Insurance draining habits. Raise it some more!! "
