‘Star' is born to play special role

There is a new bright, shining star near Victory by the name of “Star.” She is a little donkey born last Dec. 16 (that terrible, stormy Sunday that canceled everything in central New York) and weighing almost 10 pounds. The fact that it was stormy probably saved her life as her owners, Dave and Diane Matthews, stayed home that morning and checked on Star's mother, Molly and their other 50+ animals. They didn't even know Molly was expecting and all of a sudden saw the little baby donkey in the lane near the barn looking very cold.
Star was brought into the house to get warm and kept in a room there until she was stable.

Her first theatrical appearance was at the Countryside United Methodist Church and the Victory United Methodist Church on Christmas Sunday, Dec. 23, as part of the nativity in the Christmas pageant. Diane and Dave's grandchildren, Brianna, Keith and Destiny, help care for the donkey along with friends Elizabeth and Shannon.

On their farm, they also have 12 horses, 17 dogs and 30 cats as part of their animal control and sheltering business.

The little donkey, now some 40 pounds heavier, also just “starred” in the Palm Sunday walk around the inside of the churches during the procession portraying Jesus' entry into Jerusalem.

Both appearances took some time as most of the parishioners wanted to touch or pet the little animal. It was a joy for young and old alike to see such a special participant. Star loves people and romps right up when someone comes to see her. She also loves riding in the truck's backseat for outings.

We look forward to seeing Star again and other of God's creatures participating at events coming up in the Town of Victory. Star already has one parade request - she will be on a float in the Fourth of July parade in Fair Haven this summer.

In other church news:

The Easter sunrise service was held at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, March 23, at the Victory United Methodist Church. This tradition has taken place for many, many years. The faithful men of the church cook breakfast, ready at 7 a.m., for the congregation after the half-hour service. In the kitchen this year were Roger Coleman, Aaron Dates, Zach Dates, Bill Godet, Ken King, Kevin King, Dave Shurtleff and Ken Van Patten. It is a time of wonderful fellowship and brings grandparents, parents, children and veterans back home from near and far. Thanks, fellows, for getting up so early and for the great breakfast. Happy Spring and Happy April to all. The next firemen's chicken barbecue will be held at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, April 20, at the firehouse, Route 38 in Victory. Please mark your calendars. Also mark your calendars ahead for Monday, May 19, when the Old Brutus Historical Society (Weedsport) will hold its monthly meeting at the Victory History Center. The meeting is open to the public and more information will follow in April.
