YMCA getting ready for spring

The United Way Hotel Miniature Golf Tournament is being held today at the Holiday Inn. The Auburn YMCA-WEIU has been partnered with Nucor Bar and Steel Mill for our hole and it was decided to come up with a Soap Box Derby Avenue since they are our major sponsor for this event. According to Steve Komanecky, this will be a great hole with one of the features being a real Soap Box Derby that people have to golf around. It should prove to be a real challenge and I am sure the golfers will have a lot of fun with it.
The Auburn YMCA-WEIU is also sponsoring two teams. Our first team is named 3Ds and an N.

In a league of our own, Steve Komanecky, Fitness Director; Bill Brown, Maintenance Director; Amy Pedly, Child Care Director and myself, will be challenging the other Y team to get a better score. We are so bad, we couldn't think up a name for ourselves. All in all, we are looking forward to some good laughs and lots of fun at the end of the day.

We are already thinking about our YMCA golf league which we run every summer. This is a non competitive league of two man teams. It is open to YMCA members as well as the general public. It is a great recreational league which allows beginning players to have a chance to play each week and not worry about competing against a lot of other good golfers. Included in our league is a happy hour at the first day of play so that people can meet other people playing in the league. There is also an end of league tournament and banquet with lots of great door prizes. Another plus if you are just starting out with golf - you won't get discouraged over a long period of time. League play is on Monday evenings at Lakeview Golf and Country Club. Be sure to sign up for this great league.

Congratulations to all of our Stingray swimmers who qualified for the state competition in Long Island. Many of our swimmers set their best times at this state meet. We have a number of swimmers who will be going to the nationals in Florida in April. This qualifying meet includes swimmers from all over the YMCAs in the United States and it is truly an honor to be part of this competition. David Hamilton, our Stingrays swim coach will be going to Florida with his swimmers to coach them on to their best times ever.

It doesn't seem possible, but many of us are already starting to think about our programs for the summer. Besides our regular, Camp Y-Owasco, we also have camp for our preschoolers as well as for the school's program. Steve Komanecky and Jeff Hanno have been busy setting up a variety of sports camps for our youth which will keep everyone busy for the entire summer.

The Bowl-A-Thon is really moving along and we are getting quite a few more sponsorships as well as donations from a number of businesses for our door prizes. We are still looking for bowling teams. Don't forget to get your friends together to form a team. It will be a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
