OSWEGO -- The State University College at Oswego reports a student died this month after contracting a rare strain of bacterial meningitis that is difficult to treat and vaccines given to his classmates probably had no effect.
No more cases have been reported since freshman Craig Schiesser, 18, of Westbury in Nassau County, died March 14, college spokeswoman Julie Blissert says. Students are on spring break, due to return Monday to Oswego, 34 miles northwest of Syracuse.
Blissert says Schiesser had the B strain, one of five types, and vaccine does not affect it.
Two students at Cornell University in Ithaca, 45 miles southwest of Syracuse, are being treated for the same strain.
