Ninety-five thousand a year for a new school principal. I can't imagine there are even two people working in one family making that much, very absurd.

I don't think we need three firehouses in Auburn because two can cover the city of three square miles just fine. Close it and lay off a few firemen, and that ought to save some money.

Conservatives could easily survive if there were no liberals ever around again, but liberals could never survive unless there were plenty of conservatives because conservatives work and pay for everything that liberals want for nothing.

Have you ever noticed that all these Marxist communist wannabes around Auburn, none of them have ever lived under communism or under Marxism in any country but ours? But the people that come here, and I know plenty of them, from Eastern Europe who have lived under communism and Marxism, they're all very conservative and despise communism and Marxism.

Just wondering will we ever get a Christmas Tree Shop?

Clearly there is no logical voting system attached to whom becomes a Citizen Girls' Volleyball All-Stars. Otherwise Erin Myers wouldn't have been left off the list.

in 27 years my electric/phone/cable.etc has all been turned off atleast 5-6 times/ had 2 vehicles re-poed which I got back and pd off/First work comp case costed me 4yrs and 3 knee surgeries/latest work injury has costed me 5yrs and so far 1 surgery BUT overall, I didn't run to alcohol or think some "coke" would CURE my woes!
And I didnt run to the nearest state office to bail me out either!

Maybe it's just a story. Well, let's see what I can do. I will call this fictional person "Bill"

Well Bill had crabs in High School. He was 20 yrs old before he dropped out of 10th grade. He worked in a hospital as a laundry tech. He had crazy fetish that involved Dial soap and Zircon encrusted tweezers. His mother saved newspaper clipping of him. He was not Lather, but he was Bill. He one day was viciously attacked by a monster dog with rabies. He died. "

Karl spoke of Quality aid, you dont think homesite, if you save XX they not only match but triple the amount for a down payment of a house. Thats not quality aid? Or the organization "moms with cars" that if you put up 1000.00 they give you reliable vehicle with warrenty for a year is quality? Or supplying you with a full scholarship to a college plus a monthly stipen while attending is not Quality?

THe truth is --its not good enough in their/yours eyes!!

Farmer's Gal wrote on Mar 28, 2008 7:47 AM:

" I don't know that I think we all have equal opportunities -- luck and being in the right place at the right time seem to play a role as well. I've known too many hard-working, diligent, persistent people who did NOT get lucky and who, despite education and efforts, have NOT done well in life due to circumstances beyond their control.

That said, we are all still responsible for making the effort or not.

There is not a race, ethnic group or other subdivision of the human race on this planet which has not oppressed or abused another group at some time in its history. Having been oppressed in the past is not an excuse to turn around and oppress the descendents of your oppressors in this era. Two wrongs do not make things right.

It was not right when a black person was denied a job, or acceptance to a college or a promotion because of his or her race. It is no more right that the best candidate, if that person is white, should be denied the job, acceptance or promotion because s/he is white. Reverse discrimination is no more right than what was done before and creates more problems than it solves.

It's been many years since I read Stephen Carter's book against Affirmative Action, but I'll see if I can dredge up the main points from my memory. I agree with him completely that a job, a scholarship, a promotion, etc. should go to the best qualified person regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. If you are a person in a previously oppressed group, and you get a job, a scholarship, etc because of your race, how does that make you feel? If you have any honor at all, it makes you feel like you got something you didn't deserve, like you would rather be able to stand proudly knowing you were the best candidate because of who you are inside as a human being, not because of the color of your skin on the outside.

Furthermore, it gives a basis for racially-based prejudices among the population at large, who look at blacks who are able to advance and assume they only got there because of their race. Again, if I were the black person who got ahead, I would want everyone to know it was because I was a hard worker, talented, qualified and the best candidate available -- not because someone was given me a guilt-driven perk. I'd want my PRIDE, not a gimme "prize." Giving out prizes based on race just creates resentment on the part of those who don't get the perk and robs the perk-getter of his or her rightful pride in the accomplishment.

Yes, punish businesses which discriminate against minorities, women, etc. But reverse discrimination has not solved any problems, but has perpetuated others and created new ones besides.

The worst I have seen was in an education professor, now deceased, who told me that it was our duty as educators to teach white children to feel guilty about what their ancestors did to minorities. That is one of the sickest things I have encountered in my life. To think someone was teaching teachers to teach ANY child to feel guilty about who s/he is makes me furious.

NO CHILD -- black, white, hispanic, native American, Asian, whatever -- no child should be made to feel bad about who he or she is based on the ethnic or racial or gender group to which s/he belongs. The children are not responsible for what some people did generations ago. They are not even responsible for actions of their parents. Teach children to feel good about who they are and to treat others with kindness and respect.

Likewise, I think reparations are bull. It's the way politicians play the guilt card the same way they sometimes play the race card -- for political advantages. Reparations do nothing to correct wrongs done in the past. The truth is, wrongs done and done and cannot be undone and nothing we can do today can change that fact. If one person himself is guilty, then let that person pay. But as a group, if our ancestors did wrong, we are not responsible for that. We are responsible for how we behave today. Again, kindness and respect are the key things.

My mom, who was originally an English teacher (in case you hadn't guessed - my dad taught Math and English until he went into the computer industry in 1969), later worked as a baker in a cafeteria in the Detroit area. She worked with mostly African American people, many from poor neighborhoods in the City, but she also worked with some middle-class, educated types of both races. And I went to Wells with any number of African American women. What I've observed myself is that race alone is not the determining factor in the sort of behaviors that MISSY and cm describe. Among many of the workers at the cafeteria, you could tell they had a totally different culture -- that's what made them different, sometimes almost incomprehensibly different. Their rationales for unwed mothers having babies at 15 and 16 to different fathers -- my mom told me how a couple of the girls explained it to her -- it made sense to them, though it'll still never make sense to me. (It had to do with proving themselves to be independent grown-up women). Contrary to popular opinion, she found that the guys who had fathered children in this fashion were devoted dads who spent more time with their kids than a lot of suburban middle-class white dads we knew. It was all just very new and different in terms of culture. Yet it wasn't race-based, or not alone, because the black women with whom I went to school had a culture and value system very similar to my own.

Personally, I think there are huge divides in this country based more on income levels than race, though I don't deny race plays a role too. Study the rural white poor in this country and they have a different culture than the urban black poor, for example -- and they are both very different from middle class folks no matter what race. I'm not passing judgement and saying this one is better or that one is stupid, I'm just saying that the cultures are very different. We tend to believe that everyone is "like us" -- and I think this leads to a lot of misunderstandings, judgements and prejudices. But artificially trying to force change by imposing what is a discrimination against members of the group which formerly was unfairly dominant is not a solution.

In my humble opinion. "

" Missy K--first of all--your family heritage is German, French and Irish.
Bottom line, honey--YOU'RE CAUCASIAN! You are WHITE! So spare me any inspirational stories of how your family "busted their humps" because unless your skin is BLACK, you don't know jack about the hurdles of being black in a country as racist as ours is...
What's that? You want proof?
The fact that we're having this conversation about the issues in the news right now is proof enough.
Secondly, I recognize all of your attempts to steer this conversation into tangential subjects like affirmative action but this subject started after our resident Obama hater said that "blacks so monolithically vote for candidates that favor abortion, homosexuality, open borders."
Oh really?
Well if that wasn't the stupidest thing I've heard on here in a long time?
But what was worse was that the Citizen's editors treated it as if the city's Black population didn't read the Two Cents section--and so I'll ask again--CAN YOU IMAGINE IF ANYONE ACCUSED WHITE PEOPLE, CATHOLICS, OR ITALIANS OF BEING SO POLITICALLY SPECIOUS?
Of course then we get all the nascent racism bubbling up from all the subtly racist people like movedsouth and cm and Missey whose Racism is so camoflaged and intrinsic that they don't even see it for what it is--you guys cloak it in the new "hip" fashion of decrying Black people under the all-encompassing ruse of "personal responsibility"---as if repeating that mantra just absolves the onus from being racist because it ascribes a "reason" and "motivation" for it which sounds on its face, "reasonable"
Listen up, people. I see you clearer than you see yourselves. The fact is, there are JUST AS MANY crack-addicted, lazy, feed-off-the-system WHITE and Caucasian people as there are black feeding odd the system, taking your tax dollars, sitting on their fat bottoms eating twinkies!
Do you know that many statistics show that WHITE people consume FAR MORE illegal drugs than do blacks?
Have you ever really researched the undeniable bias in our system of "justice" against blacks? DO you know that the Federal studies show whites constitute 80% of the USA's drug users; Black people, 12%. Yet 43% of those convicted of drug trafficking are black.
According to Newsweek, proportionately fewer black teenagers use drugs than do whites or Hispanics.
The New York Times reports that although Blacks represent about 13 percent of the total population and 13 percent of those who are monthly drug users, they are 35 percent of those arrested for drug possession, 55 percent convicted for possession and 74 percent of the total serving sentences for possession.
In six California counties independently surveyed in 1995, 100% of those
individuals sent to trial on drug charges were minorities, while the
drug-using population in those same counties was more than 60% white.
Now listen up people--you know what all that prison time results in in the black community?
Lost school time.
Lost jobs.
Increasing dependency on welfare.
Less fatherhood.
More kids being raised in one-parent households.
Higher divorce rates.
Less stability in black families and households.
More teenage pregnancies for lack of role models, ie, more babies born into poverty.
It's a vicious cycle.
There is a well-recognized bias in the so-called "drug war" against Blacks. Research it yourself.
I'm not extending a big "pass" to slackers or system abusers--no matter what color they may be. But to pat ourselves on the back for having "risen above" while we're comfortably Caucasian just makes me a little bit sick to my stomach at the self-congratulatory self-righteousness of it all. Phleeeeze!
Or go on living in your own little fantasy worlds about every Race having "equal opportunity" if it helps you sleep at night and makes you feel good about yourselves.
Unfortunately, I'm a little more realistic about the injustices and difficulties.
Let me ask you guys something--how many young black men might be inspired to dream big dreams if Obama were to succeed to the Presidency? How much might that inspire the Black community to look at itself and hold up a mirror?
Here's a parting shot for you to consider--when people say that "America's not ready for a black president"--it's because of people like YOU.

And to boot, you are responsible for how many children and teachers every day? Along with after school activities/sports/dances that they often attend, I think that might be slightly low for a fair wage. "

" It's called P O V E R T Y and
D I S C R I M I N A T I O N. Get it? Of course not. Hardly a level playing field, even with the programs that have been put in place for them, which are bare minimum at best.

I'd love to see movedsouth, missy, and cm have to live the life of a black person growing up in poverty.

Yes we have come a long way from the days of slavery, but I wouldn't propose that's saying much, there's still a long way to go.

" On the surface 95K for a principal seems like a lot. But those in the know realize that there is actually a major shortage of certified school administrators now. If you don't pay them well, they quit after a year and take a better paying position somewhere else. That's why if you look in the classifieds there are constantly school districts looking for principals.

BTW- The Christmas Tree Shop actually has a lot of great deals. "

" Karl
While I am at it. I am German, French and Irish. My family in europe would all have been considered serfs(slaves)in the Middle Ages.Does that mean that I have a claim on those countries?
My relatives came to this country when there were no social programs. They busted their humps, died early, so that their famlies could survive. They asked for nothing except the opportunity for a better life. They worked hard and each generation was a little better off than the one before.
I have visited 38 countries and our poor, would be considered rich in many of them.
Free food, free medical, almost free housing, free education, college grants for the poor, minority business opportunities, low and no interest loans.
Yes they really have it tough.
Go to South East Asia,Mexico,Aferica if you want to see real discrimination and suffering. So Karl don't lecture me. "

" Bill Cosby was on Oprah 3/6
with his new book "Come On People"

1. 1/3 of homeless are black
2. 12% of the general population is black; BUT 1/2 the prison population is black.
3. 28% black born today will go to prison.
4. 50-75% high school blacks are drop-outs
5. 70% of black babies born today are from single mothers-children without fathers.
6. Black youth are 6 times more likely to die of homicide than white youth.
7. leading cause of death among black males ages 15-29 is Homicide.

Blacks people condemmed Bill Cosby for what they thought "he was airing their dirty laundry in front of whites"

Cosby states blacks need to STOP with
"It's NOT what he's doing to you, It's what you're NOT doing!"

Bill Cosby states the facts and states the truths, maybe YOU and Orchard st, and James st, and Wall st, and Brogan Manor, and the rest of the BooHoo-er's should read the book! "

" PS
There are many fine black famlies that have taken advantage of many of the programs that were in place to help them get into the middle and upper middle class. My comments are not directed at them. They are directed at the people who think just because their skin is a different color, we owe them a living. "

" exactly why no one can move forward--with thoughts of this country owes those they oppressed?
oh yes lets continue to cry over what is done is done and well LONG AGO OVER WITH>>>
and the blacks don't cry boohoo-all we hear is I'm black you're white so you're a racist. I didn't get the job because you're racist(not that my police record should have anything to do with it-or I failed a drug test!)

I am not singing about what a "N" you are BUT oh lets take that word out of Huck Finns book-school kids should not read such talk but
OH lets listen to it from your car or on the Awards shows!
WHO is disrespecting themsleves because their great great great great great great grandma was MAYBE a slave?!!!

Show me the stats on white crying Boohoo and the blacks crying Boohoo!??

Even Bill Cosby is telling HIS kind to stop the Boohoo and get off your butts and be parents and decent people!
because I agree with Bill Cosby I am racist?!

"inflame and incite simpletons" exactly, it raised your cat a tad higher didn't it?

" Karl
I only watch CNN.
I was in the service with many black people.
I am a Democrat, but I think over the past 40years we have done a lot for black people and it is now time for them to quit blaming everyone but themselves for the way their life is now.Women with 6 kids by 5 different fathers. Single mothers left because the fathers don't think it's macho to use a condom.
Get off your high horse and live with some black people for a while before you dare lecture me.
