Better than ever

Sandy Vertz decided this season she was going to take a little time off from bowling, but that doesn't mean she hasn't noticed the increasingly strong performances by other women bowlers in the Auburn area.
“A lot of girls have been getting 300s lately,” Vertz said. “I really have to congratulate all of them; you really don't see it that often.”

Recently, Vertz found herself joining the growing ranks.

After taking a year off last season, Vertz decided to get back on the lanes.

“I wanted to get back into it,” Vertz said. “But I wanted it to be fun. It was getting to the point for a while where I wasn't really enjoying myself, so I wanted to take some time and let it be fun for me again.”

As a way back into the game, Vertz has been bowling off and on this season as a substitute on Friday nights with her boyfriend, Jamie Cordway's team.

“It has been fun,” Vertz said. “I have definitely been enjoying bowling again.”

And on March 15, things fell into place and Vertz bowled the game of her life.

“I was bowling really well,” Vertz said. “I was really focused on my marks and how I was throwing the ball and making my shots.”

Even though she felt she was bowling well, the feeling that a 300 was close didn't settle in until after the eighth frame, when a little friendly advice from Cordway came in handy.

“It was nerve-wracking,” Vertz said. “I've been close to shooting 300 before, but never have until now. My boyfriend reminded me to take it slow and be calm and when I made the last three in the 10th that was really exciting.”

Vertz's career stretches over the past 15 years and she found her way to the lanes almost accidentally.

“Some girls I worked with needed a bowler,” Vertz said. “So I got started with their league and have been bowling ever since.”

Vertz said she was drawn to the challenge of the game, but as time progressed and she found her own niche, her focus has shifted.

“You learn,” Vertz said. “You learn where to throw the ball or where to move or what the oil patterns are like. I really liked the challenge and I liked the competition. But now really it is just about getting out of the house and having fun and seeing friends.”

In her career, Vertz has earned some impressive honors, but her personal highlight was in the The Citizen Masters.

“I won in 2004,” Vertz said. “That was great and then the next year I was the runner-up. But winning, that is probably one of my proudest moments.”

And now that she has reached the 300 milestone, Vertz is ready to get back to making the game a regular part of her life.

“I've been having fun bowling again,” Vertz said. “Before (the 300 game) I was thinking about getting back into it more next year. I'm thinking about joining a league.”
