Paul Taylor dancers to perform at Landmark

On Wednesday, the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse will host one of the world's most renowned dance troupes: the Paul Taylor Dance Company of Manhattan. It will be the company's last upstate New York performance before their statewide tour of Pennslyvania.

The company is in its 53rd year of presenting modern, experimental and avant-garde dance, with 127 dances in its repetoire.

According to the dance company's Web site, Paul Taylor's choreography in the 1950s was “so cutting edge that it was not uncommon to see confused audience members flocking to the exits.”

Despite the bad taste he may have left in the mouths of more conservative spectators, Taylor has received numerous awards in both the United States and France honoring his artistry.

Taylor, now 77, is not an unknown to the Salt City - in the late 1940s he was an art student and a swimmer at Syracuse University before beginning his studies of dance at Julliard. Syracuse later gave him an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree.
