Two Cents

Monday, March 24, 2008 11:10 AM EDT

Don't blame me for this mess Auburn is getting into --- I voted for Tim Lattimore last November.

Hey Joe, how about a fundraiser for me? I can't pay my taxes because Brandstetter voted yes on everything.

On the news they keep saying we're doing good in Iraq, that the surge is working and we are safer. News isn't asking where the oil money from Iraq has gone, why Halliburton can't account for billions, and who got the billions they gave away in Iraq?

What word starts with a letter B - baseball. Baseball is a wonderful game.

The Citizen's Two Cent forum has enabled every left-wing kook in Cayuga County except Rigby and Lynch to gossip.

It doesn't matter to me what kind of parking they have downtown, but I thought it would be more convenient if they'd left the meters. But I don't go downtown and I don't understand why anyone else would.

Two Cents will be updated online as new submissions are called or e-mailed. To contribute new Two Cents items, please call 253-5311 ext. 292 or e-mail twocents@lee.net.

" FG,
I see karls point when people do not take responsibility for their pets. Or move and leave their 6 cats behind (which happened right next door last summer).
I just had a conversation with my sis in GA-she has 3 acre home, and more cats, dogs, chickens, and now a goat that she cannot possibly take care of! She's an animal lover and when she hears the word POUND she thinks they will all be put to sleep. People are also always dropping pets off near her home, POUND is evil in their eyes too!

" Exactly, Nature,
I see this 15 minute ideal being abused in many ways! more neighborly wars and wasted police calls-just what Auburn can do without!
I agree an overly dog barking, hours on end can be annoying yet odds are it's neglected or something is wrong. The neglectors are the true violators.

In my neighborhood-EVERYONE has a dog, usually more than 1 (I have 3), if one dog barks they will all bark.
Also being in a out-walking-after-dinner area you will hear each dog bark as the "strangers" pass their fenced yard!
Yet as neighbors do--if one is barking non-stop we take a look, for this is NOT the norm with the dogs in our area.
That is a plus for neighbors!

" Yes, QT, PB5 = Bedrock. What the PB means? the 5 means five points. Bedrock was fun wasnt it?

If I am not mistaken brew was being facetious about cats on a chopping block.

This new dog law is creating alot of yipping when basically it boils down to #1: the poor dogs left tied out as if they were not living creatures. There was one in this 'hood but the people were so scary, u were afraid to do anything. And #2 of the law is leashes (oops did I spell that right? lmao) goes both ways the vicious dogs who attack, such as our poor Barney suffered or cute dogs running around that can get dognapped or hurt somehow. I applaud the law in its entirety except I feel it can and will be used for neighbor war. But isnt that what Auburn is getting to be? "

" I always like to hear that the groups who work with feral cats are on the job. It means they are getting enough donations and skilled veterinary volunteers to do an important job in our communities. People who complain about feral cats would do well to make a donation to one of these groups.

I bet you could make up for almost all past disagreements with Karl if you could get that vet van to take care of the cats living near his house, LOL!

Some breeds of dogs have a powerful mothering instinct. They use German shepards to mother big cat babies (lions, tigers, etc) in zoos when the mothers reject them.

We had a German shepard when I was first married who was the most loving animal that way. She'd lick the kittens so their hair stood up like little punk rockers, and she'd even very gently pick them up with her big teeth and help the mother cat put them back in their box when they were at "that age" when they could get out but Mom-cat wasn't ready for them to do so.

One of the kittens would crawl up on Duchess' back and curl up in the fur on her shoulders and sleep. They were inseparable until Duchess passed away. That was long ago (1990), and the kitty has long since come to her end as well, but we have memories and photos -- and new cats besides! "

cm wrote on Mar 26, 2008 8:49 AM:

" Yes Fg we do take off the bells, for the cats safety too. He may need to NOT be heard! Especially since my cats are both indoor and outdoor cats.
One cat will sit on my van, One sits on the roof, the 3rd likes the trampoline, and the 4th mostly stays indoors but heads out once every 2 wks for about 3 days-he stays on the roof of the shed!

We have strong laws on outdoor cats-they must have shots and be micro-chipped or the owners are fined 500.00 the first time and 1000.00 the 2nd time!
I have seen animal control around with his meter checking if they are micro-chipped!
A block away there is a totally wooded area-with a large clan of feral cats, the clan has grown smaller due to a group that comes to the area and spays/neuters them. If they are sickly they are taken to the pound and put to sleep.
The VET mobile is fully equipped to do the surgery and place the animal back in their "homes".
This program is all VOLUNTEER ! "

I have 4 cats-rescued all of them. 2 were 4wks old and 2 were 2wks old. I think the younger you get them at the better loving they can be, if you spoil them like I do!
The last 2 kittens, I had a dog with pups, she would let them nurse, she would clean them, and they slept with her. 2 yrs later they still cuddle and play with the dog as if she was their mom!

Of course, cm, it's not the DOG'S fault it's barking. It's the owner's job to see to it that strangers are checked out, or that the dog is put out somewhere s/he won't be seeing strangers which worry him/her.

And you can clip that little bell off the cat's collar (I always do -- it's not natural for a cat to have a bell and it often bothers the heck out of them). Of course, I live in the country where no one gets bent out of shape if a cat follows its natural instinct and goes hunting. There are so many mice and moles and such, that mostly the cats don't go after birds much, though once in a while they'll get one -- sick or elderly, I always figure. My best hunter is a sweet tom who has post traumatic stress from abuse from a previous owner, who also had his toenails torn out (that's how they do it), which almost always causes a cat psychological problems. I don't know how he does it, but he brings home his "prizes" regularly, toenails or no toenails. He's also come a long way from the easily startled and always fearful animal he was when I first got him. Nothing wamrs my heart like seeing him feel safe and relaxed enough to roll on the rug purring with his toes in the air.

Anyone know anything about a former Senator named Mike Gravel? I guess he helped put the Pentagon Papers into the public record, and is against the war and nuclear power and for universal health insurance and "direct democracy." He's speaking in Ithaca at the Workers Center on the Commons Monday night at 7 PM. First I've heard of the guy.... "

" Mark -- if I lived near you, and your dogs were just chasing around playing and barking for joy, that would be a glad sound and wouldn't bother me at all! I just can't stand to hear some poor miserable animal tied up barking piteously for hours -- like where I used to live. The poor thing would go "bark-bark-bark [pause] bark-bark-bark [pause]" for hours and hours on end, usually all night as well as most of the day. I could see him out my window straining to try to get to his people when they walked back and forth beyond his reach ignoring him day after day. I called the Dog Warden repeatedly, but he never did anything about the poor creature. THAT'S what needs a crack-down, not happy dogs frolicking around their yards in the middle of the day.

You are quite right -- there has to be sensible application of the law, to do something about abused and neglected animals and their neighbors who are forced to listen to their suffering, and to NOT hassle responsible owners of happy, well-cared-for pets.

In 6 mos I will start using the card for gas and pay off every month. My other card is AE and pay off every month. This is what helps your FICO score. "

Farmer's Gal wrote on Mar 25, 2008 1:24 PM:

" Gator -- I also learned (the hard way) that if you jump too often from one card to another, they will A) turn you down (I was turned down for having moved money from one card to another within the previous 2 years) and B) it will count against you that you appied and were turned down.

I do have one card that had a lower rate for a transfer, but they make me pay that lower rate portion off first while the higher rate portion accumulates interest and grows bigger while none of my payments are put against it. I have one to go and the low interest portion will be done, but that was another lesson learned.

Basically, they'll get you one way AND another. I'm sure this is why usury was illegal in the Middle Ages -- one of the few ways that era was better than our own! "

" If your dog is barking more than 15 minutes and you haven't gone out to see what's the matter, yes, you bet, you should be slapped with a fine -- not only because you are being a nuisance to your neighbors, but because you are neglecting your animal. A dog barks because A) there's someone out there who the dog feels shouldn't be there or B) because the dog is miserable and lonely, maybe cold and hungry too, or maybe he has gotten tangled in his lead. If you are going to have a dog, you have to be willing to put in the time commitment to taking care of it or you shouldn't have a dog.

telldastory -- thanks for letting us know about your friend who's about to ship out. Many of us who oppose the war have these folks in our minds and hearts daily and we hope and pray (depending on our religious/non-religious beliefs) they will come home safe and sound in both mind and body. Realistically, though, the chances are not that good. A larger percentage of soldiers come back with mental/emotional problems than come home healthy, not to mention those who come home physically injured, or who don't come home alive ever again. It makes us mad because we don't believe for a minute their sacrifice is for a just cause.

Credit cards: Alas, Gator, I have played that game before and know how to carefully read and interpret the fine print. I read and re-read the last couple of these offers and it was very clear (though ONLY in the fine print) that the bank was reserving the right to change the interest rate at any time for NO reason -- not because you used the card for something else, or had a late payment or anything like that, just at their own discretion.

Takes us back to the campaign of the Attorneys General of each of the states and their work to protect us from such things being undermined by a Federal Agency, the OCC, which is supposedly supposed to be protecting us, but instead is protecting predatory lenders.

Anyone else get to see Obama talking with the troops yesterday? Clinton had a session with them too, but I was in a meeting and couldn't listen. (I can put that in a browser window in the background and listen while I work, which is nice, but not while I'm in a meeting). He does handle himself well, though he also supports continued and perhaps increased troops in Afghanistan. None of the candidates are sufficiently against the whole "War on Terror" tripe for my liking. I can see we have to pull out carefully, but I still think, the more quickly we can prudently do so, the better. There is no winning a war on terror. Your best bet is to better defend your own borders and work to have better relations with the rest of the world, or if you can't, then stop trying to control their governments and let them kill each other but leave us out of it.

Maybe I am becoming even more cynical than I was before, if that is possible! "

EISENHOWER ADDRESS...

The conjunction of an immense military
establishment and a large arms
industry is new in the American
experience. The total influence -
economic, political, even spiritual -
is felt in every city, every
statehouse, every office of the
Federal Government... In the councils
of government we must guard against
the acquisition of unwarranted
influence, whether sought or unsought,
by the military industrial complex.
The potential for the disastrous
rise of misplaced power exists and
will persist... We must never let
the weight of this combination

for granted... 1961

" FG-I would not be so quick to discard the offers you're receiving on new credit cards. The rate is indeed "fixed" providing the amount you transfer does not change. Let's say you transfer a balance of #5000 to a lower interest rate card. Provided you do not make any other charges to that card your rate will not change, unless of course you default on a payment. Even if you are notified your interest rate has changed it will not affect what is currently on the card. Now if you make more charges it will affect the entire balance. Now you may consider keeping your higher interest credit card for small emergencies but but this can often get someone in trouble because they run the card up again. A prime example is my JC Penny's Mastercard, I have a 4.99% for the life of the loan, which simply stated means as long as I never use that card to charge hotels, etc my interest rate will never change. It also means if I make purchases at JC Penny's for out of town family I will have to pay those charges off first before any money goes to my 4.99% loan. The problem with a variable loan is they are usally tied to the prime interst rate, etc. Personally I have no allegiance to any credit card company and jump to whoever is offering me more for my money. Not implying you are this type but many people forget to cancel unused cards which will affect what interest rate they are offered, they think if they don't use the card it isn't on their credit anymore. If you are not doing so already may I also suggest you take advantage of the reputable companies that offer a free credit check to ensure there is not something that may affect the rates you are being offered. They are printing more money every day, which devalues the dollars you have, and prices continue to rise.

Maybe you're fine with that. If you agree with our foreign policy it tells me you know little about it besides what the evening news and the corporate press in general feeds you. I suggest you read Orwell's 1984 - we are living it now.

You still haven't explained how this war/occupation has anything to do with freedom, and how you are supporting the troops more than others.

I honestly would rather live in Canada. But the globalists have their designs on Canada and it is not all that far behind the US in corruption, so it's just a matter of time unless people wake up.

You're paying about what I am paying in property taxes for a place worth 3x more. Taxes are unreasonably high here, and frankly I do not understand how they are justified. But at least the money is not spent on killing innocent people.

The point is that the decision to go after this particular politician for his bedroom hankie-pankie when so many politicians are undoubtedly just as guilty was politically motivated and had the effect of covering a much more important scandal by drawing attention elsewhere. In magic, they call such a maneuver sleight-of-hand. "

I don't know if you support our troops, BUT I have to believe you support freedom. Again I say, we live in the greatest country in the world, SUPPORT OUR TROOPS! "

" Good points, brew.

I get those credit card transfer offers in the mail. I saw that the variable interest on one of my cards had gone up more than I really want to pay, so I was reviewing to see if any of these offers were better than what I have.

In big letters on the front, and in the text of the letter the offers say "FIXED RATE!!!" But there's an asterisk. Looking at the tiny print, there's notice that they can change the "fixed" rate any time they want! So, how is that a "fixed" rate?!??

Thank goodness for my decent job, and that I've paid down my debt and hope to have it gone within the next 2-3 years, tops. It must be a nightmare for people with modest salaries or on fixed incomes. How can people be blamed for "not planning better" when there are these predators out there pulling the rug out from under them this way? If you make financial plans for your future based on your earnings and your understanding that a fixed rate is fixed, then the creditor suddenly boosts the rate to double what it was, how is that your fault that you can't afford your debt? It's just not right, neither what the predatory lenders are doing, nor those who are so judgemental towards people in debt. "

" Yes, thanks FG for that great link. I had forgotten about that site.

Did you check out the War on Terror is a Fraud link while you are there? I haven't looked at it yet, but as I recollect the site is very credible, and I can guess what they bring up.

Anyhow, the Spitzer thing is very troubling, but not surprising given the current administration. They make Nixon look like an amateur. You know things are really bad when you almost wish that Nixon was back in office rather than the scumbag we have now. "

" The OCC is waging this war on consumers in the credit card industry also. Credit card companies are holding back payments to collect late fees, changing contract terms at their whim, declaring default on a credit account that is completely up to date because another credit card issued by another lender is in default and the list goes on and on not to mention rates as high as 35%. The same attorney generals are fighting these abuses against consumers and are being stopped by OCC. The OCC says that this matter is theirs to regulate but they do nothing. As John Mellancamp says "I fight authority but authority always wins." "

" If you count the bodies of the people who were injured on the battlefield, yet died elsewhere, the numbers would most likely be triple.

Then of course you have the contractors and mercenaries that are not counted either, so we're up to at least 10,000 as a conservative estimate.

This creative death accounting happened in Vietnam too.

As they say, the first casualty of war is the truth.

But hey, KBR and Halliburton are making a killing, pardon the pun, so who cares? Right, CM? "

I would rather go in person.

I agree many PRO's have let their greed shame them from the true spirit of the game.

I do miss watching my boys play little league, the best games are from the tiny t-ballers, they are the funniest to watch!

" FG, I heard about the Spitzer thing too.

I definitely have an issue with Spitzer's hypocrisy as well, but I have a bigger issue with the hypocrisy on the other side. It does seem to me that this was a politically motivated hit.

And what about the Don Siegelman case?

The US is beginning to look more and more like Stalinist Russia. "

" Karl, you forgot the part about standing around waiting for your turn at bat, standing around waiting for the pitch, standing around on a base waiting to run, standing around in the outfield waiting for a ball to come your way-- Snnnnorrrre!

I like excitement in my sports, but I can't abide loud noise -- no motocross for me. Or jet skis, ATVs or snowmobiles. Heck, I make my kid run the vacuum cleaner. I've been known to listen to hard rock -- with the volume turned down, LOL! I get bored watching race car drivers go round and round in circles too, so to each his own. Lots of people are bored by football, but for me, this is the long, dull desert season from the Super Bowl until September. "

" Our most recent previous governor dug his own grave by making himself the public crusader against vice and corruption, then indulging in it himself. Talk about hoist-on-your-own-petard! Hypocrisy is a killer, but I am quite sure Spitzer is far from being the only one in politics.

However, I just ran across some info that makes it look like there may have been other motives behind his being singled out to have his private skeletons let out of the closet.

Three weeks before the "prostitution scandal" hit the media, former Governor Spitzer published a letter in the Washington Post about a scandal which directly affects a lot more Americans than Spitzer's own personal escapades in a hotel room.

Let's talk about the OCC vs. all the Attorneys General in the United States in their bid to protect home-owners from predatory lenders. Let's talk about who benefits from Spitzer being backed down from his campaign, along with other states, to pass laws to protect the people. Who benefits if the predators are protected?

Actually, seeing as how the govenrment ran so fine without him during his illness, they have proved that they do not need all those do nothing legislators and should eliminate most of them. Especially when you look at how much money is being spent to man the County Manager's Office. "
