MISS: To a fire that destroyed the home of Cayuga County Red Cross Real Hero Tristan Morgan and his family. The 5-year-old, who called 911 when his mother passed out due to a migraine complication, was honored with other Real Heroes on Tuesday.
The loss of their home is a terrible tragedy for the family and hopefully the community will respond, as it has for others, in helping Tristan's family recover.
HIT: To the financial turnaround at Auburn Memorial Hospital. The local health-care facility and its hard-working staff have dealt with a lot of adversity - Chapter 11 bankruptcy, thwarting closure of its obstetrics unit - but sunny days seem to be on the horizon.
AMH CEO and President Scott Berlucchi announced in a State of the Hospital address Tuesday that it is posting financial gains, its first in six years. The hospital's staff and the community has to be thrilled with the good news and hope that is the start of a new era for AMH.
HIT: To the Cayuga Community College nursing program. The program is ranked fourth in the state among community colleges for percentage of students passing the National Council Licensure Examinations for Registered Nurses for 2007.
Out of 27 schools, only three had a better passing percentage than CCC.
The mark shows that the local college has a quality nursing education program and deserves the community's praise.
HIT: To the beginning of spring. As far as winters go, this past one wasn't too bad, enough snow for the children to play and sled in but not too much to make driving treacherous on a daily basis.
And while we still have to deal with the possibility of snow for at least another month, it's nice to know that soon enough, we'll see trees and flowers blooming and temperatures rising.
One more reminder of the change of seasons, less than two weeks to the start of the big league baseball season.
