A home in Owasco was completely destroyed by a wind-swept fire late Thursday night.
The two-story house with a one-story addition at 4231 Baptist Corners Road caught fire at about 11:30 p.m.
Owner Dorothy Foster and other family members escaped unharmed, but the fire spread too quickly for firefighters to have a chance of saving the structure.
The family was outside at the time fire trucks arrived, as smoke detectors blared from inside the house.
“The house was fully engulfed,” Second Assistant Chief Angelo Messina at Fire Station No. 1 in Owasco said. “The wind was the biggest contributor to the fire. That made applying water very difficult.”
Fire units from Owasco, Skaneateles, Sennett, Fleming, Aurelius, Marcellus, West Niles, New Hope and Sempronius worked against wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph to try to put out the fire, Messina said.
While the investigation is still pending, a wood-burning stove in the addition may have contributed to the cause, Messina said. The Red Cross is involved in relocating the family.
