ALBANY - New York's canals will open to boaters on May 1.
The New York Canal Corporation says the Erie, Champlain, Oswego and Cayuga-Seneca Canals will be staffed from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Canal Corporation Director Carmella Mantello says that's a reduction in hours from last year, when the locks and lift bridges were staffed from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the peak boating season.
Seasonal staffing levels also are being reduced to around 100 workers, down from the 150 to 180 the agency typically has hired.
