Administrators, teachers and students at Cayuga Community College have reasons to feel good about its nursing program.
Nursing students at the college taking the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses in 2007 outperformed students attending nearly all of the state's community colleges offering associate's degrees in nursing, Director Linda Alfieri said.
Forty of the 43 nursing students taking the national licensing exam passed last year, generating a passing rate of 93.03 percent and ranking fourth among the 27 community colleges statewide.
CCC's performance eclipsed all schools except LaGuardia Community College, in Long Island City, Jefferson Community College, in Watertown, and Dutchess Community College, in Poughkeepsie.
“I think it's just one of many indicators regarding the strength of a graduate of Cayuga because this examination tests the ability of students to apply nursing knowledge to care for clients safely and competently,” Alfieri said.
“I think it's an indicator too of our program's reputation and certainly students want to go to a strong school,” she added. “This is one of the indicators they can use to measure how strong a school is, in addition to our reputation, which is there through word of mouth regarding how well a graduate performs.”
Alfieri uses the passing rate as a report card to see how strong the college's nursing program is.
In addition to the statewide ranking, she compares the college's percentage to neighboring schools.
Crouse Hospital in Syracuse has a passing rate of 82.28 percent; Finger Lakes Community College, 89.29 percent; Monroe Community College. 92.36 percent, St. Joseph's Hospital, 88.10 percent; and Tompkins-Cortland Community College, 86.36 percent.
The state and national passing rate is 82.04 and 78.64 percent, respectively.
“For Cayuga Community College to have graduates at that 93 percent pass rate means that it's an external validation of program quality and content,” CCC President Daniel Larson said, “and based entirely upon the success of our graduates.”
