The home of a Cayuga County Red Cross Real Heroes award nominee was destroyed by a devastating blaze on Monday.
The Weedsport Fire Department responded to a call just after noon of a grease fire that quickly spread throughout a mobile home in Kenyon Landing, 185 Henderson Lane, Brutus, Assistant Chief David James said.
The mobile home, occupied by Darby Morgan and Dusty Drake - parents of “Real Hero” 5-year-old Tristan Morgan - and their three children, is a total loss, James said.
“I'm still kind of in shock over this whole thing,” Darby said. “You don't realize how fast something like that can happen. In a blink of an eye your whole life can change.”
The Morgans will be staying with family in Auburn for the next few days.
On Monday afternoon, Darby, Dusty and their 2-year-old daughter Trinity were cooking on the stove when a grease fire broke out, James said. The fire quickly spread and turned into a structural fire.
No one was injured.
The trailer suffered extensive smoke and water damage, James said. Neighboring structures were unaffected.
The fire comes a day before Tristan is honored by the Red Cross for his courage when his mother passed out due to a migraine complication. Tristan called 911 after shaking his mom failed to wake her up.
Despite the fire, Tristan and his parents still plan to go to the Red Cross's award ceremony this afternoon at the Holiday Inn in Auburn.
Tristan was in school at the time of the fire.
Darby praised the Red Cross and its Disaster Action Team for their support and emergency assistance.
