A Port Byron man has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly trying to run down a sheriff's deputy during a high-speed chase Monday.
Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy George Lorenz attempted to stop a Chevrolet van driven by Dale Rigby, 39, of 3 Bells Way, Port Byron, for speeding on Route 104 in Wayne County when Rigby failed to pull over and led Lorenz on a chase that ended on East Lake Road in the town of Conquest, according to the Wayne County Sheriff's Department.
The chase ended when Rigby allegedly attempted to hit Lorenz, forcing the deputy to open fire on the vehicle in self-defense. Police said Rigby then lost control of his vehicle and drove off the road, where he was placed under arrest by Lorenz and his K-9 unit.
New York State Police and the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office were called to assist in the chase but arrived at the scene after Rigby had driven off the road.
Rigby suffered minor injuries from the police dog and was treated and released from Newark Wayne Hospital, police said. Lorenz and two other passengers in the van were uninjured. No charges were filed against the passengers.
Rigby was arraigned in Lyons Court and committed to jail without bail. The investigation is continuing and other charges are pending.
