An Auburn man has been accused him of stealing more than $22,000 from a Cayuga Community College bank account.
According to the Auburn Police Department, Eric E. Sutton, 18, of Lattimore Hall on Genesee Street, is charged with third-degree grand larceny and first-degree identity theft, both felonies.
Sutton is also charged with the misdemeanor of third-degree possession of personal identification information, police said.
Sutton, who was a CCC student during the fall 2007 semester, allegedly transferred money through numerous fraudulent computer transactions dating back to December 2007, according to the APD. Detective Chris McLoughlin said he could not give specific details about the alleged transactions, but no one's personal identification was stolen.
The money came from a direct loan account, McLoughlin said.
CCC spokesperson Pam Freeman said the early transactions were for minor amounts, but they later escalated in size, drawing the bank's attention. The school is currently working with the bank on restitution, she said.
“We have asked the bank to institute some enhanced security measures on that account,” Freeman said.
Sutton has also been charged with the felony of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and the misdemeanor of second-degree criminal impersonation, according to the APD. The charges, which were the result of a separate investigation, allege Sutton possessed a credit card that did not belong to him, police said.
Sutton was sent to the Cayuga County Jail on bail of $15,000 cash or $30,000 bond.
