If we are all Irish on St. Patrick's Day, then everyone will love the Andy Cooney “Forever Irish” concert coming to Auburn's East Middle School.
Starring musician Andy Cooney, the Celtic Angels Irish Dancers, musical artist Kate Purcell and comedian George Casey, it will be a fun, family-oriented evening, said George Cuthbert, a friend of Andy Cooney and father of one of the dancers in the show.
Cheryl Foster, who is helping to organize the concert, said Cooney, an international star on the Irish music scene, will be helping to raise money for St. Joseph Catholic School. Cooney performed a Christmas concert in 2006 to honor Foster's father, Robert Foster, a strong supporter of Catholic education.
The “Forever Irish” tour features three local women, Barbara Cuthbert, of Auburn, Molly Francis, of Liverpool, and Kelly Francis, also of Liverpool, as the dancers. Barbara Cuthbert, an Auburn native, will be going to the world dance championships in Ireland after the tour.
Cooney usually brings dancers from Ireland but asked Barbara and two of her friends to join him this year, George Cuthbert said.
Comedian Casey will make the audience laugh with his self-degrading, yet clean and witty family oriented humor George Cuthbert said. And with rumors of a local musical artist being invited for the Auburn performance, there will be an extra dash of local flavor, he added.
And Kate Purcell will offer her award-winning voice as she sings contemporary Irish music.
Foster said Cooney does an excellent job getting the audiences involved in his concerts.
“The music is very energizing. You want to clap your hands and kick your heels,” Foster said.
With more than 800 tickets sold, Foster is hopeful this concert will sell out like the Christmas concert. She recommends people purchase tickets ahead of time, but any leftover tickets will be available at the door.
Immediately after the “Forever Irish” concert people can go to the Ancient Order of the Hibernians on 73 Van Anden St., Auburn, for a chance to meet Andy Cooney and talk to him, George Cuthbert said. There will also be free food and a cash bar.
For everyone who comes to the performance, Foster promises an excellent show.
“This is going to be one good show,” Foster said. “Syracuse has nothing on us with the Irish Tenors. We are doing our own show and bringing in our own people.”
It will be an excellent time for the whole family to go out together, Foster added.
“It will be fun for people of all ages,” she said. “From the young to the young at heart.”
