Montezuma planning board had high hopes

I would like to thank the folks that turned out at the town board meeting in support of the dismissed Montezuma planning board. The planning board members have taken on a considerable responsibility in their planning efforts for our future community. All of us on the board have come to recognize that our community lacks character, continues to look and feel haphazard, has no planned future and has little to no code enforcement. Yet we pay taxes equal to some communities that are more progressive and are supported by more commercial businesses which employ more town residents and have a more pleasing sense of place.
As a newly-formed board, we had tried to revitalize our current zoning code, as it is outdated and has many contradictions. As directed by the town board, we were in the process of rewriting the current subdivision regulations and had started work on the new comprehensive plan. We have attended county planning-offered workshops to learn all we could.

We were actively engaged in discussions concerning the proposed CAFO pig farm, and through it all we have tried to communicate with the town board members to get them to work with us. We have repeatedly asked for information to be shared with us pertaining to any new development proposed through the code enforcement officer.

To date, no information has ever come our way. As a matter of fact, over the course of one-and-a-half years, I have only witnessed three out of five town board members, showing up three times, to see what we actually do and once it was to badger us to approve a subdivision with an incomplete application.

It’s hard for me to understand how they can come to the conclusion that they want to remove some or all of us, when they really have no idea what input each member has had. What I can say is that we have each spent a considerable amount of time working toward a better Montezuma. Why that threatens the town board, I don’t know. Please attend the town board meetings and witness for yourself what really goes on with your tax dollars.

" john - don't give up, what goes around comes around. Although you might not physically see or hear it, the Planning Board has a lot of support (even from folks in other towns). Remember, this is a democracy, not a dictatorship, and the Town Board can and will eventually be removed... "

" Just remember. The high and mighty will fall. The planning board was doing a great job. The high and mighty town board needs to realize they are supposed to be representing the town's interest not their own! "
