A pair of Cayuga County properties in Sherwood are among the 29 included in the state Board of Historic Preservation's recommendations for the state and national registers of historic places.
The board recommended the Augustus Howland House, which is located in the town of Ledyard. It is an early-19th century farmhouse that was enlarged and aggrandized in the Italianate style in the 1850s and 1860s, according to the board's press release.
It also recommended the Job and Deborah Otis House in the town of Scipio. A prominent Quaker family had that Federal-style house built in 1815.
Inclusion on the historic registers enhances a property's ability to secure public preservation grants and services.
The board is an independent panel of experts that reviews submissions and makes recommendations to the state historic preservation officer.
The state Historic Preservation Office and the National Park Service jointly administer the program.
