Cato-Meridian wrestlers Nick LaLone and Austin Lee each placed sixth in their respective weight classes at the 2008 NYSPHSAA Division II Wrestling Championships Sunday in Rochester.
LaLone (140 pounds) won his first match of the day, a pin in 4:47 against Joey Roberts, of Beekmantown, in the third round of the consolation bracket. But his run came to an end in a 9-5 decision against Cobleskill's Robert Merchant.
“He's a freshman wrestling against juniors and seniors,” Cato-Meridian coach Dan Butler said. “He was just out-matched physically. It's tough to overcome that but that's the way it's been all year. To place as a freshman, that's a pretty good feat.”
Lee (285) lost in the semifinals by a 4-3 decision in overtime against Art Garvey, of East Aurora.
“That was a make-or-break match,” Butler said. “Austin really wanted to get to the finals. He used up everything in that match.”
Lee's final match of the day was a 2-1 loss to Schuylerville's Dan Ladd in the consolation bracket.
At 96 pounds, the Blue Devils' Dom Giacolone didn't place but was hampered by a knee injury.
He sustained the injury Saturday and when he woke up Sunday, he could hardly walk.
Giacolone was eliminated by Windsor's Colton Perry in the third round of the consolation bracket.
“It was just an untimely thing,” Butler said. “It was too bad too, because I think he and the kid he lost to were the two best guys in the weight class.”
