GENOA - The dictionary definition of repent is to hold remorse or contrition for past conduct or sin.
Yet, true repentance cannot come from a dictionary, but rather from a personal journey toward spiritual growth.
The topic of repentance and what it means for personal spiritual growth was the topic of the fourth soup and sandwich discussion dinner held by the Southern Cayuga Wider Parish, Sunday evening at the United Ministry of Genoa Church.
The Southern Cayuga Wider Parish is an organization of multi-denominations that have come together through a journey of spiritual togetherness. The parish consists of nine churches throughout southern Cayuga county.
“The dinners are a nice way to create friendships between the churches and the different denominations,” said the Rev. Bob French, of the United Ministry of Aurora. “The joined events encourage those relationships.”
The dinners, which consist of homemade soups prepared by members of the hosting church, are held during Lent and always contain Lenten topics, according to French.
Each topic delves into the varying aspects of spiritual growth and what it means for personal growth outside of a specific denomination.
Guests are encouraged to bring their own sandwiches from home to go along with the soups.
French said that members of the Wider Parish hold topic meetings in December to determine the issues that will be discussed during the six-week series.
Each topic is discussed in depth with a different speaker for each dinner. The topic of repentance was discussed by the Rev. Russell Riddell, pastor of Ledyard United Methodist Church.
French said that the series consists of five dinners in a six-week series with the final dinner being held on Palm Sunday at their own churches.
“It is nice to be able to be a part of the series,” said the Rev. Joe Tagliaferre, pastor of the United Church of Genoa.
The final soup and sandwich discussion dinner will be held at the Friends Meeting House in Poplar Ridge and will delve into the topic of forgiveness.
