March has certainly lived up to its reputation so far: in like a lion. I'm so ready for the “lamb” part to kick in.
I've always found it a little weird to celebrate Easter with snow on the ground, so I'll be hoping for some green on the ground soon. I had the opportunity to go tubing during the February break on a youth group retreat, so I figure I've had my “winter experience,” and it's time to move on.
I also had the opportunity on this retreat to sleep less than six hours in two nights, and found I'm not particularly fond of being deliriously tired. I'm certainly not at my best when sleep deprived and over-caffeinated, and it sure takes a lot longer to recuperate from that kind of thing than it used to. My mind still thinks I'm in my early 20s, but the body is just not cooperating.
Weedsport's winter sports season is now officially over and the spring season is about to begin March 10 for varsity and by the end of the month for modified track, softball and baseball. I'd just like to mention the numerous positive comments I've heard about the sportsmanship of our teams throughout their regular seasons and sectionals, the graciousness in both winning and losing and the respect for the Warriors uniform. Our swimming, basketball and volleyball teams are to be congratulated for their successful seasons, but it's just as important to congratulate them and the coaches for their conduct.
There's another full school calendar for the month of March, so be sure to refer to your news notes for all that's going on in our district. As this goes to print the high school musical, “Damn Yankees,” will have been presented on March 7 and 8. I hope you were all able to attend. Each year promises to be a great time “at the theater” for the whole family, and everyone involved has put much time and effort into the production.
Weedsport APT met Feb. 12 to continue plans for the middle school Spring Fling in April, the fifth-grade circus in May, concessions for the high school musical and dance recital and further fundraising ideas. Watch for an upcoming specialty coffee sale. Our next meeting is March 11 in the high school board room, and it's never too late to get involved.
Some items of note for March: Odyssey of the Mind regional competition will be held at the new BOCES facility on Genesee Street in Auburn March 15; the middle school will present its Music in our Schools Month concert at 7 p.m. March 18, in the high school auditorium; students will have a “mini-vacation” from March 20 to 24 for Superintendent's Day, Good Friday and Easter Break; a Jr.-Sr. High Book Fair will be held March 25 through 28, in the cafeteria lobby during lunch periods, and an Elementary Book Fair will be held March 26 (viewing day) and 27 (buying day) with a special “book party” that night (bring the kids for photos with Curious George); the Spring All-County concert for Jr. High chorus and Sr. High band will be held at Union Springs High School at 2 p.m. March 29, and the Odyssey of the Mind state competition will be held that day at the University of Binghamton.
While I was looking through my school news notes, it struck me just how many of our students in sixth through 12th grades are on the honor roll (OK, I counted, and there are 155 middle school students and 149 from the high school - give or take, I only counted once!) Middle school students are recognized as Gold (averages of 89.5-100 percent), Silver (84.5-89.4 percent) or Bronze (79.5-84.4 percent) achievers and are rewarded with periodic after-school parties.
Our high school students are recognized as High Honor (89.5-100 percent) or Honor (84.5-89.4 percent) recipients. Congratulations to all the students who work hard to achieve these honors and keep up the good work.
Village of Weedsport residents: Don't forget to vote. The Village Election Day is Tuesday, March 18, at the Town of Brutus Municipal Building.
Get out and show your support for our hard-working village officials.
Lastly, I'd like to wish everyone a very happy and blessed Easter season. He is risen indeed.
