Cato-Meridian's Austin Lee advanced to the semifinals of the NYSPHSAA Wrestling Championships in the 285-pound weight class in Rochester Saturday.
The junior is making his first appearance in the tournament and pinned his first opponent, Sean Mello of Babylon, in a time of 1:59. In the second round, Lee pinned Kamran Khawaja of Locust Valley in 1:29.
“Lee has nothing much to do between now and tomorrow's match.” Blue Devils coach Dan Butler said. “He just has to go out there and do the same stuff he has done all year.”
Lee will meet East Aurora's Art Garvey today in the semifinals.
The Blue Devils' Dom Giacolone (96 pounds) defeated Tyrel White by a decision of 7-0 in the first round of the winners' bracket but then lost in the second round to Arik Robinson of Peru by a decision of 3-1.
In the second round of the consolation bracket, he defeated Austin Keough by a decision of 9-0 to advance to the third round of competion, which will take place today.
Nick LaLone (140) lost in the first round of the winners' bracket to Jeff Brigham of Roy Hart by a decision of 3-2.
In the first round of the consolation bracket, he defeated Charles Beshaw of Saranac by forfeit.
In the second round he won against Sandy Creek's Scott Luberto by a 4-3 decision to also advance to the next round of competition today.
“I'm hoping all the kids will place this year,” Butler said. “That would be real nice to see three kids all place in a state competition.”
