Union Springs was in control for most of Saturday night's NYSPHSAA boys basketball quarterfinal, but in the closing minutes West Canada Valley proved exactly why it's the top-ranked team in the state.
The Indians stole an inbounds pass and Jared Fuderly hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:40 remaining and undefeated West Canada Valley held on for a 51-46 victory at SUNY Cortland.
The Wolves, who led for most of the game, were led by Julius McClary who finished with 14 points, 12 rebounds, eight blocks and two steals. Devon Brady added 12 points.
With Brady on the bench in foul trouble, Union Springs gave up the lead with 2:08 left in the third quarter but they took the lead back and maintained it for most of the fourth.
West Canada Valley (25-0) will represent the Central Region next weekend in the state final four while Union Springs closes out the season 20-4.
