HIT: To the state Attorney General's office for sending a representative to the area earlier this week to listen to concerns about consumer fraud.
Tracy Burt spent time talking to local residents, trying to help them with their problems. There were also pamphlets and other information available to aid people.
It's easy to forget that there are times when state government does care about its average citizens. Hopefully, there will be more outreach of this type in the future.
MISS: To the passing of Eva A. Dehn, a woman who made the community a better place to live.
Dehn was involved with numerous civic organizations, including Big Brothers/Big Sisters, RSVP, Cayuga County Office of the Aging, the NAACP and the Community Preservation Committee, and she volunteered at Auburn Memorial Hospital.
Her most important accomplishment may have been her assistance in the founding of the Hospice of the Finger Lakes, which has helped more than 2,000 families get through the toughest time of their lives.
People like Dehn make Cayuga County a great place to live. We were fortunate she settled here after coming to Auburn from Europe in the 1950s.
HIT: To the successful test of the Auburn Enlarged City School District's Messenger parent-notification system earlier this week.
Messenger is an automated service that calls specified phone numbers when the school district has an early dismissal or other situations.
With more parents in the workplace, anything that can help inform them of what's going on with their children is valuable.
MISS: To a brief power outage in the area on Wednesday. Ice buildup on an insulator caused a five-minute blackout, fortunately, NYSEG was on top of things and quickly restored electricity.
This outage reminds us never to take things we think of as basic necessities, such as electricity, for granted.
