It used to be that daylight-saving time came the second week in April but this year March 9 is the official date to “spring ahead.” As children, we are taught that this means we gain an hour of sunlight in the evening; as an adult I have realized what it really means is that it gets late sooner: your body says 9 p.m.; the clock says 10 p.m.
But the adjustment to daylight-saving time is always worth it when the spring evenings beckon us out of the house with their lingering twilight.
This year at Powers Library we are asking you to make note of another positive schedule change: beginning the month of April, the library will switch hours on Wednesday and Thursday.
Previously we had been closed Wednesdays, and open from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursdays. But with interlibrary loan deliveries coming Monday, Wednesday and Friday, it was determined that we could serve the public better by being open on all three days of delivery; thus Powers Library will be open from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and closed on Thursdays beginning in April.
We think this will come as good news to our patrons, but the good news does not end here.
Beginning this year, Powers Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday of the year.
Previously we were closed on Saturdays during July and August.
Now our only Saturday closures will be due to federal holidays or emergencies such as inclement weather.
What else is new at Powers? We have added many titles in our large-print section including best-sellers, mystery, historic novels and humorous books. Our recorded-books section continues to grow as well, with popular titles from such authors as Janet Evanovich, Lisa Scottoline and Philip Roth, and we have just begun collecting listener-friendly audio lectures on such topics as global warming, the Civil War, famous legal cases and more.
Additionally, we continue to add DVDs and videos and have heard that our collection of movies for patrons to check-out is one of the best.
Friday morning story hour will also continue. Seasonally-themed stories and crafts will keep your little one(s) engaged and eager to learn more.
Pre-school classes are always welcome to attend; please call the library at least two days ahead in order to assure adequate accommodation for groups.
