ALBANY - The state Senate majority plans to reject Gov. Eliot Spitzer's proposal to remove state troopers from schools for redeployment fighting crime in upstate cities.
Currently, 92 state police officers serve full-time positions as school resource officers in more than 100 upstate school districts.
The Senate's Republican majority says it rejects Spitzer's plan in their budget proposal to be released next week.
They'll also include additional funding for an extra class of state police.
The Senate says that's part of a plan aimed at increasing children's safety.
State police say the school resource officers responded to more than 2,500 criminal calls, made over 1,000 arrests and confiscated almost 100 legal weapons this school year.
