At 22 years of age, Justyn Coomber of Auburn has spent a lot of his life on the lanes.

That started with an early initiation into the game.

“My grandfather was a really good bowler,” Coomber said. “Robert Doan, he got me into bowling. I went with him while he bowled and then I got in the youth leagues from there. I just always liked the game.”

Bowling through much of his youth before taking a little hiatus in his late teens, Coomber came back to the game a couple of years ago, ready to hit the adult leagues.

“I just always liked the game,” Coomber said. “And I wanted to get back into it; it was just time to start bowling again.”

Coomber said that it didn't take too long for him to find his rhythm on the lanes again.

But from his youth career to the last few years in the men's league, the milestone 300 game had eluded him.

That is until recently.

On Feb. 21 at Falcon Lanes, Coomber hit his first career 300.

“It was great,” Coomber said. “I couldn't believe it really, I got my first 300.”

While 300 is still a rarefied number and even after many bowlers hit their first the next one may still be far off, Coomber didn't have to wait too long for No. 2.

Back at Falcon on Feb. 26, Coomber hit the elusive number again.

“I couldn't believe it,” Coomber said. “I had just got my first 300 and then I got my second one five days later. I really couldn't believe it.”

Since making his way back to the game and joining the men's leagues three years ago, Coomber has been chasing the magic number.

Bowling every Thursday at Falcon Lanes, Coomber has seen his game steadily improve this season.

“Things have just been getting better,” Coomber said. “I wasn't bowling too well at the beginning of the season and then about halfway through I switched balls and things have just been getting better ever since.”

In the weeks leading up to his 300 breakthrough, things were definitely looking up for Coomber.

“I got a 290 about five weeks before the first 300,” Coomber said. “I'm averaging about 205 right now. I just feel a lot better and like I've been bowling better lately.”

Now that he has a pair of 300s under his belt, Coomber has his next goal in mind - The Citizen Masters.

“I've tried to qualify for the past three years,” Coomber said. “I keep just missing it every year. So for me that is the next big goal, just to qualify would be great. I haven't done it yet, but that is the next big goal.”
