Someone should lower the score to get a GED

Tuesday, March 4, 2008 12:07 PM EST

There are so many people that are going back to school classes and home schooling just to try and get their diploma. They are out in our work force and some can't even read or comprehend what they are trying to read, so how do you think they'd be passing their grades to receive their GED?
I was asked to write this letter for some adults who have children (families) and are working to support themselves and their family, and go to school or home schooling.

I understand that to meet the high school requirements for an equivalency diploma, you need a score of 2250. Don't you think someone could lower this number some? Then you need a 410 minimum in order to not have to take the subject over again, plus you have five major subjects on the test.

Well, you need to be sure they comprehend first. Someone should explain this some more by doing an article for those who plan on ever taking a GED test. To all of you that do, good luck.

" Shirley, are you kidding? Lower the score, these kids today are just plain lazy. They donot want to get up in the morning to go to school in the first place, they donot want to participate in any classes or even be bother by school subjects. If they attended some kind of school and paid attention to the teachers they might have picked up some of the basics and they wouldn't have to struggle on the GED test. So your problem solver is, these students couldn't bother to go to school or show some kind of intrest in school, so because they never bother to learn the basics, the state should lower the score for the GED test. So now you say they didn't want to learn in school, give them a GED based on lower score, if there is a 15 or 16 year old and reads on a third grade level give them a third grade GED score. If they are 15 or 17 and looking for a $20.00 or $30.00 dollar a hour job and they can only do second grade math, give them a GED score based on a second grader. Is that lowering the score for you Shirley? because the $20 or 30 dollar an hour job will never be there, they will be lucky if McDonalds hires them. Tell these lazy kids to get off there lazy butts, and quit looking for the lazy way out. "

" Shirley gets a "D" for disastrous.

As it is, know-it-all teens are already dropping out of school at an alarming rate thinking they can take the lazy way out by passing the GED.

Now, Shirley wants to make it even easier for them. Shame on you, Shirley. "

" Doesn't the "E" in GED stand for "Equivalent?" So, why should a person get a GED without doing work equivalent to what s/he would have done in high school?

If you can't make the cut, you can't get the diploma. It's that simple. If you really want it, or really need it, work harder, get study help, try again -- it will be worth so much more to you if you know you earned it.

My father's mother dropped out of high school during the Depression because they needed her to work on the farm. She got married, moved to the city, had kids -- and went back to high school at the age of 40. That's right -- she went to every class right alongside the 16-18 year olds and she EARNED her degree.

If you really want it, you have to be willing to earn and deserve it. "

" Yeah, I agree, Shirley. While we're at it, lets just hand out PHD's, or auction them off on ebay for a "buy it now" price of say,.....$19.99?
Sooooo....your kid flunked out of the GED program, huh? No wonder, with an attitude like yours...hey, there's always "McDonalds"! "

" Lower the score? Why not just hand them the paper?? dah!
If they cannot comprehend a GED then they need not be in the work force and go back to school.
We didnt force them to have families, but we sure plan to enforce requirements needed to graduate or recieve a GED. As it is the GED is the lazy way out! "

" Wow, this letter is wrong on so many levels. Reading it tells you that the requirements should not be lowered. "
