Mary Bushallow was happy to join a team again and run cross country with the Syracuse Track Club in the Open Women's Division. She was even happier when the club nominated and awarded her the Open Women Runner of the Year Award.

After running four or five races in the Upstate Central New York Cross Country Series, Bushallow ended up in seventh place overall, the top woman on her team. This achievement earned Bushallow the nomination and win for the Open Women's Runner of the Year award after only her first year on the team.
Bushallow has been running for nearly 15 years, and has piled up many accomplishments in a career that started in high school.
Bushallow attended Auburn High School where she began running in East and West track meets with the quarter mile and half mile.
That interest sparked a career of running that led to her return to AHS, where she previously coached track for over 10 years.
She is now a special education teacher at Herman Elementary School and an adjunct professor at Le Moyne College. Despite her many responsibilities, she always finds time for her passion.
“It's a balance but I enjoy making the time and getting out to run,” Bushallow said. “I was really excited to compete again on a team and run in cross country races, before I was doing road races.”
Bushallow has won The Citizen Downtown Mile six times, has medaled in the 1500M at the Empire State Games, ran on two state championship teams in high school and can run a marathon in 3 hours and 17 minutes. “She is definitely one of Auburn's finest runners,” fellow running partner Wayne Mason said. “We go to some races together and train together.”
Bushallow coached Wayne Mason's son, Chris, at Auburn. Chris Mason has gone on to be an NJCAA National Champion for Division III SUNY Delhi.
“Mary was also one of my son's most inspirational coaches,” Wayne said.
Bushallow always tries to find time to run in her hectic schedule, but the Central New York climate isn't always kind to runners.
“I run all year round but the weather makes it difficult to get out and do it,” Bushallow said. “My goal is daily running but I try to run at least five to six days a week.”
Bushallow is currently preparing the Mountain Goat, a 10-mile race in Syracuse to be held in May. Bushallow has never ran this race before and it has recently become quite competitive.
True to her demeanor, she's up to the challenge.
“It will be really fun to do this race especially because it is the first time I have done it,” Bushallow said.
