Getting married?

AURELIUS - A wedding day is a beautiful and romantic time for a couple, but as magical as the day is, it is easy to forget all the months of planning that go into the special day.

Adrienne Marquis, left, and Suzanne Willis receive flowers from the bridal gown models at the Fingerlakes Mall on Sunday afternoon.
For several years now, the Fingerlakes Mall has been hosting an annual bridal show to help gather everything, from caterers to DJs to vacation planners, jewelers and gown designers, to put all these resources in one place for prospective brides.

“There are fresh brides every year,” said Diane Jurczak-Prue, Fingerlakes Mall general manger.

“And this is a great place to come and see all of what is out there. It is sort of one-stop shopping. A lot goes into planning a wedding and this at least helps brides start to get an idea of what options are out there from dresses and bridesmaid dresses to jewelry, and it's all here in one location.”

The show gathered together numerous representatives from local shops and businesses specializing in various aspects of wedding planning.

Places such as Bed, Bath and Beyond were on hand to provide information on things such as bridal registration, an aspect of wedding planning that has been changing in the age of computers and the Internet.

“We have 24-hour access online,” said Stacey Hooper, a district customer service representative with the store.

“These days it is about half and half with the Internet. We encourage people to come into the store and see everything and I think they like that hands on, face-to-face aspect, but they can also get on the computer in the middle of the night and look at things when they don't know exactly what they want or what they are looking for.”

Other businesses, such as Jewels by Park Lane, focus on those little details to help make that special day perfect.

Christine VanOrman, branch director, from Moravia, said that the focus of her business is to find accessories and pieces that will add the little touch.

“It is trendy and affordable,” VanOrman said.

“We have pieces from $8 to $480. We have something for everybody and I think brides like to see that there is something out there and a place they can find the right accessories and jewelry to wear and feel beautiful.”

For young couples, such as Nichole Phillips and Nick Ryan, of Union Springs, who have an Aug. 22, 2009 wedding date set, the show was a good way to do some window shopping on the wide range of things that the couple is looking to incorporate into their wedding.

“It is good to be able to see all of this,” Ryan said.

“A lot goes into a wedding and it is nice to be able to see all of this and be able to think about it and see what it is all about. You don't want to just pick somebody and then on the day of your wedding it isn't right and it messes up your whole day. So it is nice to be able to look at different things and get ideas.”

And for Phillips, who said she has already found the perfect dress, the show was an opportunity to look for ways to round out her ensemble.

“This is giving me a lot of ideas,” Phillips said. “I know my dress and it is perfect and now I'm looking at jewelry and thinking of things to wear. I have the perfect dress and now I'm looking for things to go with it and this is giving me a lot of good ideas.”
