Auburn officials don't seem to have the answers

I am an old lady who has a few questions and comments to the “powers of Auburn!”
For the past two years, on the Friday before Memorial Day, I have had to call the mayor's office to ask, “Where are the flags that should be up on Genesee Street?” I was told, “Don't know, but I will check on it.” Every other town around has their flags up. Why do I have to call every year? I do not even live in Auburn; however, I have worked here for many years. Also the flag across from Hunter's Dinerant is raggedy and is never flown at half staff on the anniversary of 9/11. Why not? “Don't know,” said the lady at the mayor's office.

Now let's touch on the saga of Meter Mania in Auburn. Where is the division of Weights & Measures? For 25 cents you are supposed to get one-half hour of parking; doesn't happen. These meters need to be calibrated correctly. Snow piled around the meter - can't get your quarter in, “too bad” according to the meter man.

Doesn't anyone care about the small businesses in Auburn? Who wants to shop or eat in downtown Auburn? Certainly not the common folk who can't afford a $10 fine, because they happened to not get their 25 cents worth out of the meter.

Who cares about downtown Auburn? I do. Scores of people that I have spoken to do also. We want the old Auburn back. The one that cared about the small businesses. The one that did not give out parking tickets on Christmas Eve, and the one that flew our flags appropriately.

" If you stand at the highest point in Fort Hill Cemetery on a quiet day, and peek out between the tress out over the city, you can almost get a sense of what it once was -- a lovely, small, light industrial town with nice neighborhoods, friendly small businesses and lovely grand homes. Sadly, it seems that's one of the few places you can still catch a glimpse of that former time. "

" Auburn really was quite a mecca in the day. I am a history buff and just luv all the old pics and stories that are told. Makes you feel 7 years old again listening to grandpa or something. Read Carmelo Signorelli's column he puts in the paper once a month. Auburn was so great, prosperous, and historic at one time it was considered for the capitol of the state! I think it would still reveal that granduer of the past if the arterial hadn't taken out so much. Much was just razed for asphalt. Its a different time thats for sure but to dwelve into hx is rewarding and a nice escape even if you and I weren't around way back when. "

" I just get tired of hearing about the "old Auburn" like it was some sort of golden age. Though I do agree about the flag issues. "

" Awwhh thats mean Andy B. Old Auburn or 'history' as I like to call it, is the foundation of all we now have - good and bad. If you turn your back on the past then you have no future. Each generation brings about worthy ideas. "

" The old Auburn you people created is the cause for most of our problems now. ?My generation is paying for your screw ups. "

" A few answers, not to be perceived as 'picking on' anyone. The flag complaint answer is found on USFlag.org. "By order of the President, the flag shall be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possession, as a mark of respect to their memory. In the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half-staff according to Presidential orders, or in accordance with recognized customs or practices not inconsistent with law."

I could not find any standing executive order that flags must be flown at half staff on 9/11. A nice thought & gesture but not in accordance with US flag code. There is no excuse for a ragged flag to be flying and that should be tended to. As for placing the flags up on Memorial Day, I was of the impression that they were put up prior to the parade every year and it probably gets done when public works gets the opportunity to do so.

The parking meter fee was increased to 50 cents for a half hour so that may be why the time allotted appears off to you. You are getting 15 min. for 25 cents. Not a job for weights & measures, a job of the city to post the fee more prominently.

I too care about Auburn. I just think that its successes and failures have little to do with meter fees and flags.
The area has a 'dingy' look to it no matter the time of year. The arterial routes drivers away from downtown, and unless you need a lawyer, a bank, a tattoo or a snack there is very little in the way of even window shopping. Those are the items that I think impact downtown far more than meters and flags. "
