I am an old lady who has a few questions and comments to the “powers of Auburn!”
For the past two years, on the Friday before Memorial Day, I have had to call the mayor's office to ask, “Where are the flags that should be up on Genesee Street?” I was told, “Don't know, but I will check on it.” Every other town around has their flags up. Why do I have to call every year? I do not even live in Auburn; however, I have worked here for many years. Also the flag across from Hunter's Dinerant is raggedy and is never flown at half staff on the anniversary of 9/11. Why not? “Don't know,” said the lady at the mayor's office.
Now let's touch on the saga of Meter Mania in Auburn. Where is the division of Weights & Measures? For 25 cents you are supposed to get one-half hour of parking; doesn't happen. These meters need to be calibrated correctly. Snow piled around the meter - can't get your quarter in, “too bad” according to the meter man.
Doesn't anyone care about the small businesses in Auburn? Who wants to shop or eat in downtown Auburn? Certainly not the common folk who can't afford a $10 fine, because they happened to not get their 25 cents worth out of the meter.
Who cares about downtown Auburn? I do. Scores of people that I have spoken to do also. We want the old Auburn back. The one that cared about the small businesses. The one that did not give out parking tickets on Christmas Eve, and the one that flew our flags appropriately.

I could not find any standing executive order that flags must be flown at half staff on 9/11. A nice thought & gesture but not in accordance with US flag code. There is no excuse for a ragged flag to be flying and that should be tended to. As for placing the flags up on Memorial Day, I was of the impression that they were put up prior to the parade every year and it probably gets done when public works gets the opportunity to do so.
The parking meter fee was increased to 50 cents for a half hour so that may be why the time allotted appears off to you. You are getting 15 min. for 25 cents. Not a job for weights & measures, a job of the city to post the fee more prominently.
I too care about Auburn. I just think that its successes and failures have little to do with meter fees and flags.
The area has a 'dingy' look to it no matter the time of year. The arterial routes drivers away from downtown, and unless you need a lawyer, a bank, a tattoo or a snack there is very little in the way of even window shopping. Those are the items that I think impact downtown far more than meters and flags. "
