QUEENSBURY - A man driving the wrong way on the Adirondack Northway was killed early Tuesday morning when his car slammed into a tractor-trailer, causing the truck to burst into flames and shutting down the highway for several hours, authorities said.
State police in Queensbury identified the driver as Stanley Chrostowski of Hudson Falls in Washington County.
He was driving his 2003 Ford Mustang south in the northbound lanes of Interstate 87 when he slammed head-on into a refrigerated truck owned by Stewart's Shops, a Malta-based convenience store chain.
The car broke into two pieces and the rig caught fire, but the truck driver was able to escape with minor injuries, authorities said.
The accident happened around 4:20 a.m. near Exit 18 just outside Glens Falls, in southern Warren County, 45 miles north of Albany.
The crash shut down all six lanes of the highway between Exit 18 and Exit 17 in Moreau in northern Saratoga County.
