A Moravia man admitted stealing two cars from a Grant Avenue car dealership in Auburn.
Stephen Badman pleaded guilty Tuesday in Cayuga County court to two counts of third-degree larceny and a count of third-degree criminal mischief for a crime he committed on Dec. 18.
Badman, 20, of 2647 Hathaway Road, Moravia, said he bashed out the rear window of a stolen 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee in anger after he was hit by another vehicle. Badman then returned to the Fox Chrysler Dodge Jeep dealership in Auburn, where he stole the first Jeep, and stole another Jeep in order to drive home.
Cayuga County Court Judge Mark Fandrich said Badman may receive a conditional sentence of shock camp eligible prison term and pay restitution based on his cooperation with authorities. Badman will be sentenced on April 8.
Also in court:
Fandrich classified a King Ferry man as a level-three sex offender Tuesday morning instead of a level two for the sexual assault of a child in 2005.
If James Chapman, 61, of 1823 Atwater Road, had not scored enough points to qualify as a level three, Fandrich could have overridden a level-two classification because of a prior sexual assault incident. Chapman, who was also classified as a sexually violent offender for the rape of a 15-year-old girl in 1987, may also be classified as a repeat sex offender pending Fandrich's review of his conviction in Maryland.
Level-three sex offenders are considered to pose the greatest risk of committing another sex crime while a level one has the lowest.
A Union Springs man pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree criminal mischief, a count of third-degree grand larceny and two counts of third-degree burglary.
Craig Mason, 22, of 19 Spring St., said that he and an accomplice stole a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu worth about $25,000 from a dealership lot and pushed it into the Cayuga-Seneca River outlet on Oct. 4. Mason also admitted to burglarizing two Springport businesses on Oct. 2.
Mason may receive a conditional sentence of no more than 1 to 3 years in prison if he cooperates with authorities in prosecuting his accomplices and makes progress in paying restitution. Mason will be sentenced on April 8.
Motions were heard in a grand larceny case in which a woman is accused of embezzling New York State Lottery money from the Auburn Family Restaurant.
Motions were heard on having a hearing on the use of previous felonies for Marie Shimer, formerly of 54 Osborne St., Auburn, and Fandrich reserved a decision on a grand jury review regarding whether or not the jury received proper instructions. An estimate of more than $60,000 is believed to have been stolen.
A Buffalo man pleaded guilty to third-degree burglary for a crime he committed on Dec. 19.
Ignatius Digaetano said he stole computer equipment from a Court Street resident in Auburn to feed his drug addiction. Fandrich said because of a prior conviction, Digaetano could expect 2 to 4 years when he is sentenced on April 8.
