Cato-Meridian wrestlers Dom Giacolone and Nick LaLone won Section III championships at the Section III Division II Championships at Cicero-North Syracuse High School Saturday.
At 96 pounds, top-seeded Giacolone claimed the sectional title after defeating Dylan Kavanaugh, of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, by pin in 3:04 in the finals. Giacolone lost in the semifinals last season.
At 140 pounds, top-ranked LaLone defeated Sandy Creek's Scott Luberto by a 10-6 decision in the finals. LaLone had to survive a three-overtime win in the semifinals against South Jefferson's Joe Beach to keep his title hopes alive.
The sectional crowns are the first at Cato-Meridian in two years.
Both Giacolone and LaLone will compete at the state championships March 8 in Rochester.
The Blue Devils' Austin Lee (285 pounds) finished in second place, losing in the finals to Chris Pike, of Sherburne-Earlville, by a 6-5 decision. Lee came into the event as the second seed.
Marc Walton (145) took third and Brandon Bosco (160) took fifth.
Port Byron's Caleb Green (96) placed fifth and closed the year out 30-6 overall. Green defeated Jared Crast by a decision of 9-3 in the quarterfinals but in the semifinals he lost to Kavanaugh by a 10-4 decision.
He also lost to Dan Haughton 5-2 and then defeated Jared Crast again in a triple overtime tiebreaker.
“Overall it was a pretty nice day for Caleb.” Panthers coach Tom Green said. “He had some good, hard-fought, close matches.”
Zac Green (171) lost in the first round to Owen German by a pin in 5:45. Green ends the year at 28-5.
