Format changes possible for Masters

A range of topics was covered at the monthly board of directors meeting Sunday night. New committees were shored up and future projects were discussed.
First, regarding the upcoming Auburn Championships, the 10:30 a.m. Saturday team squad at Rainbow Lanes has been canceled. Teams can still bowl Feb. 24-25 and Feb. 27-29, but entries close Saturday, the first day of the tournament.

For the singles and doubles March 7-9 at Cedar House Lanes, walk-ins will be accepted.

President Dennis O'Donnell said that $500 donated by the estate of Al Mamuscia would be used for the annual Bowler of the Year Award, now named in memory of Mamuscia.

The winner would receive a ring. Mike Ryan, who won The Citizen Masters, is the leader in points so far.

O'Donnell also said that anyone interested in becoming a board member could download an application from auburnusbc.com and return it to any director.

Ryan, who is also the association manager, has long wanted to establish a closer working relationship with the youth program.

He was impressed with the number of youngsters for the Byrn's Junior Masters qualifying round at Falcon Lanes recently.

He'd like to help provide direction for those hoping to make the jump to the adult leagues.

He proposed, in rough terms, Saturday sessions next August where adults could encourage and interact with the children while bowling together.

“It would strengthen our relationship with the kids and the bowling centers,” said Ryan, who added that the juniors could also learn how lanes are conditioned.

Ryan hopes to have a committee in place by March, with the entire plan finalized a month later.

Discussion then turned to The Citizen Masters. O'Donnell noted positive feedback from the men's tournament this year.

Eight non-qualifiers just below the 611 cutoff score were awarded $25.

That practice, he said, will continue.

Altering the tournament format has been a hot topic the past couple of years. The board is always open to make it better and more efficient.

“The tournament is the highlight of the season, and I realize we need to be careful about changing things,” said Director Jeff Matty, who favored allowing more entries.

Other ideas included shortening the event from four weekends to three, adding at least one Saturday evening match-play shift, and bringing the men and women together before the final weekend.

Ryan then appointed a Masters committee to hash out any new proposals for future discussion.

Association members should check the Web site for a chance to weigh in on their thoughts about any changes they'd like to see.
