Palesh needs to avoid adult movie criticism

Tuesday, February 19, 2008 11:45 AM EST

So, Mark Palesh believes that a new business, Family Video, has set up a trap to bring families in and then expose them to the worst of society?
This opinion ranks right up there with the Halloween is a trick of the devil to lure little children with treats letter seen here a while back. My my, the conspiracies that live in the minds of some.

I should like to inquire of Mr. Palesh with utter sincerity; haven't you better ways in which to serve the citizens of this city who have elected you to serve as city manager; not as “Morality Cop.”

Mr. Palesh's rather stilted view of “the worst of society” is as ill informed as it is narrow-minded.

I wonder, if he has ever taken a gander at bloodletting films like the “Saw” series, or gory blood fests like “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” or “Hostel.”

Unlike the adult videos at Family Video - which are in a restricted area - these extremely violent DVDs are in full view, and available to anyone for rental.

Yet he's offended by sexuality over that garbage?

Fortunately, Mr Palesh has annunciated a viable solution for his fundamentalist leanings against adult-content videos when he said “I, for one, will never expose my family to that store again.”

Hey, don't let the door hit ya, buddy.

I can't help adding that, if we have to live with the obnoxious bible thumpers crowding the sidewalks with their signs and screaming through their megaphones down by Wegmans' corner, and having to endure being accosted by them with their pamphlets and inquiries of my spiritual worthiness, then you and your's, sir, should be able to both tolerate and survive the existence of an innocuous video rental business which you will not in fact even patronize.

Sheeesh!

" I have gone there many times. I did not know they had adult films until Mr. Palesh provided them with all this free advertising. What a maroon that guy is. "

" Wow AJ, what an incredibly ignorant thing to say. Off topic, rude and condensending...typical lib attitude towards the military.
I was in the military as were many of the folks I work with and it doesn't have any bearing on whether or not someone is either for or against adult entertainment. It seems to be strictly a personal moral issue. "

" Jim, a good point perhaps, but Mr Palesh is overstepping his boundaries.
The city code apparently elucidates quite clearly what constitutes an "adult business"--which Mr Palesh should be WELL AWARE of--and his moral crusade his to impose his views on the city's residents is clearly at odds with code.
In any case, I take heart that the overwhelming majority of opinion on this site (check the poll) in the comments regarding this matter make it clear that the citizens of this community don't see the Great Satan living in the back room of Family Video.
And NO, the back room should NOT be locked--why make a legitimate in-code business suffer financially for the crusade of one controlling individual? "

" Just a few things...first, the City did not elect Palesh City Manager. He was hired by the Council after an involved search process. Next, if Mr. Palesh observes a commercial property that has code issues that effect the health and safety of its patrons, wouldn't you expect him to notify the Codes Enforcement folks so the problem can be remedied? Lastly, the tight restrictions placed on adult materials under City Code has been in effect for a long time. In this man's opinion, the operation described violates that Code. I'm no prude (and agree with you regarding the relative dangers between x-rated videos and slasher films) but if the majority of the citizens in Auburn want to rent these movies, they need to lobby their elected officials to change the code. Until then Palesh is just doing his job and that back room needs to be locked at Family video. "

" Karl, you don't really expect logic and reason from a retired military man do you?

Sadly, I'm sure he has no problem with violence though.

" You might want to save this Karl as I agree with you completely. Mr. Palesh should take his delicate sensiblities elsewhere. "

" Jeez, Citizen--you could have included my quotation marks and exclamation points when typing this in? Thanks, anyway! =) "
