AUBURN - Chris Gomez knows how to have fun when he's bowling. He admits to joking around on the lanes, taking in all the game has to offer.
And he throws one whale of a ball.
Gomez rolled his first 12 strikes Sunday at Starlite Lanes for a 300 game. That was enough to ignite the large group of fans. He finished with a 768 series to remain unbeaten in the Boys and Girls Byrn's Junior Masters.
“I get motivated by the cheering,” said Gomez, who added games of 222 and 246 to defeat Corey Dockstader's 520.
Dan Bibbens defeated Kevin Roche, 661-624, to join Gomez in the winners' bracket.
Chris Fleming and Mike Suarez each won two matches Sunday to stay alive in the losers' bracket. Fleming had it going, defeating Jesse Law (660-559) and Jeff Tonzi (622-611).
Suarez, meanwhile, knocked down enough pins to advance. He got past Mike Liccion, 533-488, and then slipped past Brandon Emperato, 564-524.
Roche and Dockstader remain is the losers' bracket as play heads to King Ferry Lanes next weekend.
For the girls, Britteny McIntyre stayed in the winners' bracket with a steady performance. She opened the day by edging Julie Janusz, 572-566, despite losing the third game 227-215. McIntyre then came back with a 575, besting Allie Streeter's 467. A 17-year-old Mynderse Academy student, McIntyre clearly enjoys the competition.
“I just keep trying to bowl the best that I can every time I'm out there,” she said earlier this season.
That formula has served the impressive right-hander well.
Stefanie Spinney, who was last week's high qualifier with 565, has been just as solid. She defeated Meghan Short (593-443) and Briana Gomez (543-513) to remain unbeaten.
Short rebounded in style. She fired a 600 series, which included a 245 finale, to turn back Meghan Feocco's 479.
Joining Short in the losers' bracket are Briana Gomez, Streeter and Janusz.
Losers' bracket play continues at noon Saturday at King Ferry. Fleming takes on Suarez and Roche meets Dockstader, while Short bowls against Janusz and Briana Gomez faces Streeter.
In the 1 p.m. winners' bracket matches, Chris Gomez meets Bibbens, with Spinney squaring off against McIntyre.
