Two Cents

I usually back our new city manager but I think he should stick to his job and not be the morals cop. I think most of us are old enough to decide what we want to see or not.

When somebody is both disturbed and feels like a nobody, the media vultures see to it that they are presented with an attractive (to them) solution and an opportunity to receive lots and lots and lots of non-stop attention for their trouble --- way more than 15 minutes.

Congressional hearings for steroid use in baseball is overkill. I understand the worry of abuse by children and young adults, but I'm much more concerned by the widespread abuse of readily available, highly addictive prescription drugs.

Downtown BID is supposed to protect downtown merchants from what's going on with Cosentino getting the $1 Kalet building from his buddies. But seeing as how Downtown BID's office has now moved in with Cosentino, there's a conflict of interest there, too, just like Cosentino getting these guys elected and then getting favorable deals from them.

Here with go again with (a letter writer) giving the public another moronic quiz.

We, the citizens of Auburn, demand the immediate resignation of Mayor Quill, this Brower lady and McNabb from the city council for this nefarious deed of possibly rewarding ultra-liberal Cosentino with a $1 purchase of property, evading the step of auctioning the property off. It's criminal.

" Since when does Cosentino get the credit for Quill's election? Get Real! The Kalet building needed someone other than the city to take control of it. It's been on the block for YEARS! Now Carmody wants it because it was sold for a dollar to the Starlight Foundation! By the way, it was NOT sold to Cosentino!! If Carmody wanted it, he could have had it anytime by making the same offer. I seem to remember some big to-do with him over the place he owns on Genesee Street, when he bought that one! Also, if, as someone else said here, he bought a place elsewhere in Auburn & it's still sitting there in disrepair, just as it was when he bought it. then why would anyone want him to buy the Kalet Building & leave it sit there as is. Maybe he is looking at reselling it for a profit after the State St. Mall is redone by Starlight!! Auburn is not in the real estate business. That building has been a problem for much too long. The council made the correct decision. "

" I agree it's time to cut our losses and remove the eyesore Kalet building. Just as it was time to allow Wegmans to expand and raze the theater. Lets not miss another opportunity get by us. "

" You know what they say about "assuming" well I assumed that the County employed County residents through the Civil Service board, however I was shocked to learn how many (and I mean MANY) commute from other counties to work for Cayuga County. Here I thought that in order to work for the County you had to at least live in it.... How wrong I was! "

" The city is lucky that they don't have to pay a couple of hundred thousand to have someone tear the Kalet building down. Stardust is more likely getting the building with a commitment to tear it down and rebuild it in a manner that fits the future plan for downtown. The building was a victim of economics. The city took it for unpaid taxes and it was not feasible to do anything with it. All these foolish comments about underhanded deals is not warranted. Support the city planners in their plans. "

" Let's not forget the "browser lady".

As rotten as that deal sounds, you're putting the cart before the horse, it's criminal.

I would agree wholeheartedly on an investigation, and consequences for anyone violating the law. But you cannot indict without proof. That is a fundamental tenet of democracy.

Let's try to preserve what little we have left.

Nothing like paying for the privelege of being abused is there? "

" Today's Three-in-One post:

1) Yes, I meant the Kalet's Nursing Home on South St -- I didn't grow up around here, so I didn't know there was another Kalet's; all the talk about a run-down vacant place about to be demolished, well, it sounded like that structure on South St to me. Sorry for the mix-up.

2) Karl -- I agree. I like to watch a good game of any sport played by real athletes, not super-bio-beings pumped up on drugs and steroids. Records set by drug-free athletes 30-40 years ago should not be "beaten" by these hop-heads who aren't setting records fairly with their own natural abilities -- it's like apples and oranges. I also agree that most (male!) professional athletes are over paid (a lot of female professional athletes barely make a living -- even for female pro basketball players, I've heard they average $40,000 a year -- only a handful make millions and they do it mostly on endorsement deals) -- so they should be held to a higher standard as role-models in order to earn and deserve their ridiculous paychecks. The more clean-up of professional sports, from steroids to on-and-off-field behavior, the better.

Still, it seems bizarre to me that Congress is taking up its time handling such things.

3) I remember when a friends of mine paid money to get TV without advertisements -- it was called "cable TV" and its attraction was NO ADS. I remember when the Internet had no pictures, before the Web, and there were no advertisements. I even remember when the Web first hit and there were images, but no ads. I say it's time to draw the line -- no taxes on internet sales. Besides, haven't we already driven enough business (and residents!) out of this state with our taxes? "

" Yes, the Kalet Building was really something in it's day. I remember going in there when I was a little kid with my mom. But now it's an eyesore. Why it was allowed to get that way is baffeling. You would have thought that someone would have kept it up. This must be the way of life when the city gets hold of a piece of property. They just let it go. Hope it's not too late for the clubhouse at the Y-Field. That building holds a lot of memories for me & a lot of other people too. "

irritated wrote on Feb 17, 2008 7:38 AM:

" Isnt there a lawyer in the City that is suing over the Kalets building? The one that put a bid in on it a year or so ago for a lot more than $1 ? I heard about this at work, he wanted to renovate it and actually use it. Something is fishy about this whole deal. "

AJ wrote on Feb 16, 2008 8:09 PM:

FG, don't let it rune your whole day! lol... "

AJ wrote on Feb 16, 2008 8:07 PM:

" Hi Karl.

I agree that people should be held accountable for the steroid problem.

It's just that given the constitutional and economic crises we are in right now as a result of the Bush administration, we really need to be prioritize, and I personally feel Waxman's time would be better spent holding the administration accountable for destroying our country.

"

anonymous wrote on Feb 16, 2008 6:18 PM:

" Stardust should be paying the taxpayers fair value for that property. This deal smells to high heaven. Who got the grant money the City recieved to fix it up? This has been an outrageous waste of taxpayer money, and the City needs to pay back those entities which gave them all those taxpayer dollars for nothing! "

" I disagree that the Steroid scandal is being overblown or a waste of time. I'd like to see every single one of these losers, these overpaid, whining crybabies who have no respect for fair play or sportsmanship tried, convicted, barred from the game, and their records, if any, wiped clean from the game. And I'd ban them from the Hall of fame too. "

" As a student of runes (I kid you not, in grad school at Cornell I studied Runeology along with more modern forms of German literature), I know that the Nordic death rune looks like a peace sign with no circle around it. I always found it ironic and sad that the Kalet's building, when it was an old people's home, had a great, big death rune on the front of it. I always thought, geez, I'd never send an elderly relative to an old people's home with a huge death rune front and center.

Later, someone repainted and the faux-Tudor-half-timbering disappeared and the "death rune" with it, but the place has remained tainted with an air of decay.

I have no position on the building and the deals going on around it at this time; I only note that it continues to be brushed with the shades of death and decay. "

" What Stardust is doing on State Street will mark the beginning of the rebirth of downtown Auburn. It's time to stop with the useless nostalgia and support an organization with vision. Auburn will never again be what it was. Instead it will be different and maybe even better. Get on board. "

brew1234 wrote on Feb 16, 2008 1:35 PM:

" The Kalet building and Spirits demise is not the end of the downtown. What is to come will be the renewal of Auburn. Downtowns in cities all over the country are rebuilding. Residential development is the beginning. Then restaurants and the arts will come. Then support retail stores will open. People want to live in urban areas again. Either follow the trend or get the heck out of the way! "

" The Kalet Building in its time was a beautiful building. For it to be sold for $1. For I'm sure forth coming demolition stinks. If the people had any brains they would refurbish it for a potential store or business to come in and use it. Becuase of all of the Flack the end of this month Spirits Tavern is closing. I think the City needs to get rid of Mr. Palesh and the Council should open up their eyes and look around. Auburn has nothing to offer. As a Child I can remember Auburn as a beautiful City with a lot going on and many Stores, Theaters and all. By the way how about finishing the Shrine Theater maybe that might bring some business to Auburn! "
