We have heard many times that one of the biggest challenges of running a small business or directing a not-for-profit organization is that it is very difficult to obtain affordable, quality health insurance for your employees. And, because it is difficult to do this, many small employers have a difficult time retaining quality employees, as the best workers often wind up at larger organizations that are able to offer better health insurance packages.
But, we have also learned that many small businesses do not know the variety of health insurance options that are available to them. That is why we are holding a seminar to inform business owners of the various programs that are offered by the government and by the private sector.
The Downtown Auburn Business Improvement District and Cornell Cooperative Extension are partnering to offer this useful seminar, which will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce, 36 South St., Auburn. Presenters will be on hand to discuss options available in the following areas:
€ Group insurance plans
€ The Child Health Plus program
€ The Healthy NY program
€ Multiple individual insurance plans available to businesses through Blue Cross Blue Shield
There will be brief remarks from each presenter. And significant time will be devoted to answering specific questions from the attendees. So, please plan on coming.
It may be surprising for many to learn that there are several options out there that are not only affordable, but that give small businesses an advantage over larger employers when it comes to offering health care plans that meet their employees' specific needs.
If you plan on attending, please call Christina Selvek, small business development educator at Cornell Cooperative Extension. She can be reached at 255-1183 ext. 230 or cjs268@cornell.edu.
Quarterly BID Membership meeting
The next quarterly BID membership meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the new BID office on 2 State St.
The main purpose of this meeting will be to elect members to the BID Board of Directors. Normally, the elections are held in July, but they were postponed for a number of reasons in 2007. The following four individuals will be on the ballot to fill four board slots, the terms of which will expire in July of 2010:
€ Mike Lynch - Class A Member (Property Owner), Lynch's Furniture
€ Mark DiVietro - Class A Member (Property Owner), Silbert Optical
€ Susan Marteney - Class B (Commercial Tenant), Red Cross
€ Dave Chalifoux - Class B (Commercial Tenant), Edward Jones Investments
Additionally, City Manager Mark Palesh and/or Police Chief Gary Giannotta will discuss the possibility of having a walking patrolman downtown at certain times.
The quarterly meeting will also provide you with an opportunity to tour the new BID office space. I will give a brief report about what is happening within the BID.
And, there will be an open forum to allow attendees to voice their opinions and concerns.
Although this is billed as a membership meeting, the general public is also encouraged to attend to learn more about what is happening downtown and to become involved in the revitalization process.
Light refreshments will be served. If you plan on attending, please call the BID office at 252-7874 or e-mail aubdpbid@CentralNY.TWCBC.com.
