A Moravia man pleaded not guilty in Auburn City Court Friday to charges of attempting to break into an Auburn home while armed with a knife. He also attempted to flee on foot when confronted by police, officials said.
Troy L. Kennedy, 33, of 30 Aurora St., Moravia, was arrested on Thursday and charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree assault, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and third-degree menacing.
The Auburn Police Department responded to a report at about 8 p.m. Thursday of a man, possibly armed with a knife, attempting to break down the front door of a home at 88 Clark St., Auburn, and threatening to harm the resident, police said.
APD officer Andrew Kalet responded and found Kennedy on the front porch of the home.
Kennedy fled on foot as Kalet tried to detain him, and the chase continued onto Orchard Street, where Kalet slipped and fell on a snow-covered sidewalk, sustaining injuries to his hands and knee, police said.
Joined by other APD officers, Kalet continued pursuit and eventually detained Kennedy in a backyard area between Orchard and Genesee streets. Kennedy struggled as he was arrested, police said, and a knife was recovered at that time.
Kennedy was sent to Cayuga County Jail on $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond.
Kalet was treated at Auburn Memorial Hospital for cuts to his left hand, cuts to his right thumb and a scrape to his left knee. He was treated and released.
