An Auburn man was in critical condition Friday after he walked around railroad warning devices and was hit by a train.
The Cayuga County Sheriff's Office said Alan M. Markley, 70, of Clark Street Road, had been walking west on Clark Street Road between Beech Tree Road and Routes 5 and 20 at 5:25 p.m. just outside Auburn in the Town of Aurelius.

Police said they were told by witnesses that Markley walked around warning devices and into the path of a westbound train operated by Finger Lakes Railway.

He was transported by ambulance to the New York State Police barracks and flown to Upstate Medical Center by Onondaga County Air One, where he was listed in critical condition.

The Cayuga County Sheriff's Office is continuing the investigation with cooperation and assistance from Finger Lakes Railway.

The sheriff's office was assisted at the scene by the Auburn Police Department, Aurelius Fire Department, Aurelius Ambulance, Throop Ambulance and Onondaga County Air One.

" I am a family member...and the answer is he just thought he was young again and could make it... .amazing he is strong enough to be out walking and not bedridden in a nursing home.. we all should be that lucky at that age.. to be able to take care of yourself .. think for yourself ... yes he needs to make better decisions but the answer is he is 70.. is he stupid? no just lacking some smart choices.. but writing about someone else being stupid?.. very wrong! send a card or flowers and apoligize.. it could have been your grandparent!

thank you tejoti for your post.. means alot! "

" Maybe to you that is "just stupid" but we are talking about a 70 year old man who just may have some issues that you don't know about. So I feel that your comment was somewhat cold.Just imagine if he has family how they must feel.No one but the man hit knows why he did it
or just maybe he doesn't. "
