Julius McClary and Devon Brady teamed up to help the Union Springs boys basketball team defeat Candor 67-46 on Thursday in the Section IV, IAC semifinals.
McClary led the Wolves with 23 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks while Brady finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds. At half-time, the Wolves were up by just one point, but stepped up their game later on.
“We played smarter basketball in the second half,” Wolves coach Tim Darnell said. “We stuck with our scouting report and played team defense.”
Nick Schooley put in six points and Mike Bean came off the bench to chip in six points and eight rebounds also. Mike Howell played outstanding defense holding the Indians' leading scorer to just 16 points despite averaging 25 points per game this year.
“Coming into this game we knew their strengths and weaknesses and we focused on that tonight,” Darnell said.
The Wolves now turn all their attention to the only team that has beaten them this year. Lansing has met the Wolves twice and both times come out on top. The Bobcats are 8-0 in their conference play and 15-1 overall.
“Their are eight teams competing in the IAC tournament and only two still remaining right now,” Darnell said.
“Both teams are fighting for bragging rights. We have to out rebound them and control their main scorer. We also need to control them in the paint in order to win Saturday. McClary and Brady can't be the only two rebounders. They have a lot of big players for them and therefore we need our guards to also rebound.”
Despite the outcome in the IAC, the Wolves will compete in sectionals beginning next week.
“Win or lose, this is a good game for us because it prepares us for the better teams in sectional play.” Darnell said. “Our focus is on sectionals and this is just another test for us.”
Union Springs (17-2 overall, 15-2 league) travels to SUNY Cortland to take on Lansing at 8:45 p.m. Saturday.
