ALBANY - Roads slick with a mix of snow, slush and icy rain forced school closings and slowed commuters across a large swath of eastern New York Wednesday morning.
A coating of ice covered the 2 to 6 inches of snow that had fallen from north of the Mohawk Valley through the mid Hudson Valley overnight. A mix of rain and sleet continued throughout the day and turned back into snow in early evening, said National Weather Service meteorologist Bob Kilpatrick.
Dozens of school districts and colleges from northern Westchester County to the southern Adirondacks canceled classes and schools in the Binghamton area were also closed.
Many others in the lower Hudson Valley and central New York from Oswego to around Syracuse were operating on one or two hour delays. Fort Drum, north of Watertown, was also operating on a two-hour delay for military and civilian workers and the Army canceled all outdoor physical fitness training for soldiers there.
A woman was killed on Long Island when her sport utility vehicle slid on ice, went through a guardrail and fell off a parking garage into a construction pit Wednesday morning. Her husband managed to jump to safety from the passenger seat, according to Nassau County police. Their names were not immediately released.
The state police Thruway detail reported no major problems on interstate highways, but dozens of minor accidents were reported throughout the region. No serious injuries were reported.
About 3,500 Central Hudson customers remained without power in Orange, Dutchess and Ulster counties Wednesday evening, and National Grid reported around 4,600 customers without power, including about 2,200 in Saratoga County.
There were other sporadic outages across the state. The weather service warned that ice accumulation could bring down more power lines and trees, causing further outages.
