Twenty local swimmers will be competing in the Section III swimming qualifiers today at Nottingham high school. Beginning at 10 a.m., eight Weedsport swimmers will try to get good enough times in their respective events in Class B, while 12 Auburn swimmers will try to advance in Class A, where they are the defending champions. The finals will start at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Senior Warriors captain Kate Scarbrough will look to defend her 1 meter diving title, while her classmate and co-captain Luke Baker will compete in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay. Joining Baker in the 200 medley relay are junior Sean Wignall (50 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 200 freestyle relay), freshman Nathan Earl (200 IM, 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle relay) and junior Matt Crowley (200 IM, 100 butterfly, 400 freestyle relay). Also competing for the Warriors will be Justin Spencer (100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle relay), Mike Reese (200 and 500 freestyle, 400 freestyle relay) and Quenton Grutzik (100 and 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle relay).
Auburn will send a swimmer in every event but diving. Senior co-captains Preston Chaffee and Sean McNamara will lead the team. Two-time defending 100 backstroke champ Pat O'Donovan looks to get the hat trick in the event. Lucas Zelehowsky will also try and defend his 500 freestyle title, but will have some competition from Chaffee. Also competing for the Maroons are Greg Rifanburg, Gary Leader, John Tehan, Justin Sawran, Connor Kilmer, Pat Stevens and eighth graders Adam Zelehowsky and Sean Doyle.
