On Saturday, Wells College will be host renowned dance troupe The Paul Taylor Dance Company of Manhattan. The performance is part of the Wells College Arts and Lecture Series, which brings professional artists yearly to the Aurora campus to speak about their disciplines of theater, music and dance.
The Paul Taylor Dance Company is in its 53rd year of presenting modern, experimental and avant-garde dance to communities the world round.

According to the dance company's Web site, Paul Taylor's choreography in the 1950s was “so cutting edge that it was not uncommon to see confused audience members flocking to the exits.”

In spite of the bad taste he may have left in the mouths of more conservative spectators, Taylor has received numerous awards in both the United States and France honoring his artistry.

Paul Taylor and his company were also the focus of the 1999 film “Dancemaker,” described by Time magazine as “perhaps the best dance documentary ever.”

And this will not be the first time Paul Taylor's genius will grace upstate New York. Taylor, now 77, was a student of art and a swimmer at Syracuse University in the late 1940s before beginning his studies of dance at Julliard.

Taylor 2, Taylor's second company, which he started in 1993, has been in the Finger Lakes region through January, offering master classes at local schools including Wells College, Cornell University and Ithaca College.

They will presenting more than 10 classes over the next two weeks at Wells, featuring ballet and modern dance technique, Taylor repertory, and a lighting design class, all of which are open to the public.

The Feb. 16 performance is expected to sell out and will feature three dances: Taylor's collection of 127, titled “Cloven Kingdom,” “Equinox” and “Promethean Fire.”
