Auburn city councilors this week will vote to move forward on a plan to repeal the cap on gasoline taxes that it had adopted in 2006.
The council will vote on holding a public hearing on a measure that would restore gasoline taxes to be calculated as a percentage rate on the dollar.
Under the existing cap, taxes are calculated at a cents-per-gallon rate limited to the first $2 per gallon.
Such a move to eliminate the cap would follow a similar measure adopted by the Cayuga County Legislature as part of its 2008 budget process.
County legislators made the change in an effort to boost revenues, and they said the cap had not provided adequate relief for county residents.
City staff is recommending the new measure in order to conform with the county rate, as well as create new revenue.
A resolution in front of councilors this week creates a public hearing on the gas tax law at 6 p.m. Feb. 28. The council meets this week at 5 p.m. Thursday at city hall on South Street. .
