GATES - A 17-year-old Rochester girl died and 24 other people were hurt in a 36-car chain-reaction accident during a whiteout on Interstate 390 in suburban Rochester. State police Capt. Michael Cerretto said 17-year-old Le Ngo, a passenger in one of the vehicles, was killed in the 12:40 p.m. Sunday crash.
At least four people had to be extricated from their cars by the Jaws of Life, police said at a news conference. A portion of I-390 near the Greater Rochester International Airport was closed for several hours as the wreckage was cleared and victims assisted. A many as 25 ambulances and at least 15 tow trucks were called to the accident scene, which stretched about 100 yards along southbound I-390. Northbound lanes were reopened within two hours but southbound lanes remained closed for about four hours.
Two buses were sent to the scene to keep people warm while the wreckage was sorted out.
